I love my Defender to bits - I must do as bits is what keep falling off her.

My list:

1. driver's door handle came off (replaced)
2. gear knob disintegrated (cannot be replaced!! WTF???)
3. windscreen cracked (replaced)
4. all four universal joints failed (replaced)
5. tyre blew out (all four replaced)
6. headlight failed (bulb replaced)
7. both headlights failed ----pending---
8. flat battery (replaced)
9. rear doorsill went rusty (sorted and painted)
10. rear passenger door opener surround fell off -----pending-----
11. currently making an interesting graunching noise when reversing under hard lock, but I think (hope) it is just a new tyre rubbing. -----pending----
12. air-con packed up (fixed)
13. after resealing, regassing and three months, air-con packed up again. ---pending----
14. winch cable snapped. ---pending----
15. brake light smashed ---replaced---

Always something to do on this car, but nothing too serious yet (touch aluminium) -I suppose that is all part of its 'character'

smilesmile

She is a 2008 2.4tdci, had her about 18 months and she has done about 47,000 miles.

What's your list like?

I feel sorry for you, clearly you are not benefitting from the proper Landie experience!

I was in a LR dealer a while ago examining a farmer-spec Defender 90. A salesman came over and said "Are you admiring the build quality?" I didn't know if he was being serious or taking the piss.

One day I WILL get all the bits in my 110 working at the same time!

wink

As my headlights stopped working I thought it must be the fuses, but no, the fuses are fine. The bulbs I am assuming are fine (one is brand new and why would they both fail simultaneously?) so what else can it be? Confuddled.

Steering lock seems to be acting up (the one that locks the steering when the key is out and the steering turned). Took ages of wriggling the key and the wheel to get it to release.

Now its rainy season which means windows up a lot of the time and after sweltering like a sauna I finally took my Defender to an aircon place to be fixed. Diagnosis - aircon if fine, just no power to it. Electrical problem. Had the electrics checked and after three hours poking around the fault was found to be a wire deep down the back of the engine had chafed against the engine and shorted. Never had a car do that before.

Headlights - fault found to be the indicator/horn/dip stalk.

Two down, but being a Land Rover two new problems have arisen in their place:

Leaking brake fluid from brake thingy that splits braking fore and aft. Needs new brake thingy.

Ignition key barrel jamming and refusing to turn. Apparently a common problem caused by rubbish part in the ignition key barrel. Not yet sure how to deal with this.

Good thread.

Why am I still considering a four year old supercharged petrol one?
Because, like the rest of us sufferers, you are a man of character.

Excellent! Let us know what bits break. My first clue as to what I had let myself in for was when the door handle came off in my hand.

I can now add injector seals to my list...rolleyes

Fortunately I check my oil often and before any journeys over an hour so noticed it before any damage was caused. It happened on Friday morning when I went to the LRO International show in Peterborough so at least I was in the right place!
How did you know?

Finally got indicator stalk replaced, so headlights are working again. It was a pain having to use my roof spotlights all the time. Not to me, to the car ahead of me hehe. Got the brake valve replaced too so now braking properly again.

So the vehicle is in tip-top shape, yes?

Nooooooooo. Of course not. The water pump is fked. The water pump! First car I ever owned that I even knew had a water pump. And it is fked. How the fk can a sodding water pump fail on a car that has barely covered 30,000 miles in six years?

The large plastic but of trim on the B pillar has detached itself from the pillar and is only held on by the seatbelt fitting and is rattling in most annoying manner.

I went and viewed a land rover freelander td4 tonight and all was great with the car other than loud muffled buzzing noise coming from the rear driver side wheel arch. Can anyone help clear up what this might be for me please?

I have side steps on my Defender but I suspect not the same ones. I use mine for fending off trees and stuff.

Not my car but I was in my local main dealer tonight and the service lass was discussing a job she was sending through for approval, fairly new defender, ABS control module, £2600 + VAT + fitting. At that point I stopped eyeing up the demo defender in the showroom!
ABS is an option. You don't have to have it. In a Defender, the other car is your crumple zone.

My Defender let me down a bit today... Set off at 430am to deliver some stuff to a remote jungle location, going up a hill it
loses power and almost comes to a standstill. Change down into second and with max revs it bearly moves even on the flat. Almost leaves me stranded near a very dodgy shanty town. Fortunately limps back home at 30km per hour, low range.

No idea what is wrong, engine was fine, clutch was fine, some noise from below. Suspect turbo or diff knacked.

Right, this is what they found:

filthy MAF sensor
filthy throttle body
split intercooler hose
worn bushes
knackered rear ball joint

now working on a mysterious noise from the handbrake drum.

The good news is that it is relatively cheap to fix everything (mysterious noise not counted as unknown cost).

With its fixed intercooler hose my Defender is going like an animal again, which is good.

The rear seats have mysteriously stopped wanting to go up and down, the passenger doors mysteriously stopped wanting to unlock and the reversing light still doesn't work, apart from that it's all good!
