Hi All,

Allow me to set the scene..

Earlier this winter, i bought a 2004 FFRR Vogue from a private seller found on ebay. It was close, so i thought i would have a gamble.
The car was in decent condition, FSH, only 4 owners (not too many for a 2004) and was all importantly a V8 fitted with LPG.

Anyhow, i almost immediately got the dreaded air suspension inactive warning, and a funny noise from under the bonnet.

I bottled it and sold it on via ebay with the stated faults, and got a little less than paid. New owner thinks he'll need to replace water pump and air compressor and will be good to go.

Perhaps i should have simply stuck with it - but these two faults in quick succession lead me to believe it may be a money pit of a car.

ANYHOW -

I have now realised my life is not complete without an L322 - and i look at other L322s on the road with a sense of deep jealousy. I need to get another. After my short period of ownership i now "get" why people stick with these cars for years, even if the running costs are not great. Oh and the mrs does not like the ride in my z4 compared to the rangie.

So - this lead me to think - surely the old, ratty high milers, early cars will be less reliable than the newer revised models.

I was considering a diesel 2009 / 2010 model - I understand there are new engines after 2010 - do these return better mpg? 3.6 tdv8 vs newer 4.4 tdv8?

Are the later cars more reliable or is that wishful thinking?

Cheers smile

Damn... I was hoping you'd come along and tell me that all rangies made after 2010 are faultless and great. I knew deep inside that this was not to be the case.

So the argument tilts back to picking up a well maintained earlier and cheaper model that will lose less in depreciation to offset fixing costs?

Either this or an approved used / warranty? Are the LR warranties any good?

It's a bit of a sadistic addiction.

In fairness the LR warranty on both has been great (including breakdown), and the dealers very helpfull.
I would not want to run one out of warranty as costs can soon rack up (a parking sensor issue flushed out other problems that amounted to well over £2k work), and the dependency I have on the vehicle combined with lack of time to fix it.

Good stuff. Seems like an approved used would be the way to go. Do they have a cut off point for taking out extended warranties e.g 5 years old / 100k miles? Or do you have to source via land rover?

Can't comment on the TDV8's but I would urge you to try a SC model before you commit.
Don't tempt me! My ideal car would be a 2010 model supercharged in stornoway grey with light/cream/ivory interior.

I've just traded in a 2011 4.4 TDV8.

I would sum the experience up by saying relatively unreliable cars but good manufacturer warranties and support.
Seems like consensus is to simply run one under warranty...

I've got a 4.4 running LPG but am looking to upgrade to an 07/08 TDV8 mainly because I always seem to get caught short finding LPG at the moment.
Oh that reminds me, fuel pump on mine had given up - would only run on lpg.

I would get out in the middle of nowhere and realise I had 1 light of lpg left and be left hoping to hell there was a shell garage close by!

I fancy a 59/10 plate facelift, I think they look great and the interior changes freshen it up a bit.

We have a good LR indie nearby - unfortunately they are booked solid for 3 weeks ahead - read into that what you will...

I'd try and go for a 60-11 reg one so it would come with the 4.4 engine and the 8 speed box too.
Good shout!

I'm thinking same as you though - would the 10 plate be worth getting at a 10-15k premium to an 07 seems hard to justify.
