Anyone's help on this would be hugely appreciated.

I have a 2008 Range Rover Sport TDV8 (colossal 150K miles). Bought it a few weeks ago. Last week it just would not start (very cold morning). Engine would turnover but just wouldn't fire up. I've also had, on occasion, error messages after starting the engine saying 'special programmes unavailable' (or something like that). Restarting the engine would often clear this.

So - this morning was a nightmare! Another cold morning and although the engine started I got an error stating "Transmission Failure, some gears unavailable" with an "F" showing where the gear number would normally be. Well I had in fact no gears at all as I could not get it out of "Park". I restarting loads of times (sometimes the engine wouldn't start at all similar to the previous week) and eventually it did start without the error message. I then drove to work and it was faultless....no problems at all.

It seems to hate cold mornings.

Does anyone recognise this fault? Can anyone recommend anything before I take it to a dealer...? All help very much appreciated. Thanks.

Perfect. Great advice. Thanks guys. I took it to Rovertune and they also immediately said battery but convinced me I needed a proper Landrover battery. I'm impressed with these guys actually. If anyone's in the Reading area I would definitely recommend them. Mind you - the battery (including VAT & fitting) was £280!! Ouch.
