I need it to transport 2 children, 2 dogs my wife and me. Needs to be 4 wheel drive as I live out in the country up a steep hill and when it snows the road becomes impassable if you do not have 4 wheel drive. Like I said I also would need to use it as a daily drive. Would be interested in new or old depending on which is best for me.

£30K would be okay, but may look for a nearly new to take out some of the depreciation

The FL2 looks pretty good and would be my choice of soft-roader*, but given your criteria I'd prefer a more road-bias for the 51 weeks it's not snowy and would look at a fast Legacy, Forester (or even Impreza), Audi or XC70.

*Although the 5-door Wrangler is pretty cool.
Tried the XC70, nice but to big
Audi over priced
Impreza is this any good for two dogs?

Fast Legacy, Forester and Wrangler not tested yet.

Thanks to all comments, all is welcome. The Wrangler is pulling at some old strings. I am trying to keep a level head and keep saying to my self, fuel will only get more expensive, you need to think about costs, of st, then I think, speed, comfort, room for all, and then it all gets to expensive.

to keep you all updated, will have on loan for the weekend a FL2 so will be very interesting to live with one for a couple of days.

I have on loan a Audi Q5S at the moment and hate it. Hope the FL2 will be more interesting to drive

Will let you know how I get on next week

Why? comfort/performance etc?
The interior lets it down IMO. Has a cheap feel. The seats are also to wide for me, find myself slipping around in them when cornering or/and hard on the gas or brakes. The turbo lag also annoying, driving position to van like for me.

You would not believe the trouble I had in getting a loan fl2 for a demo drive more than half an hour. Wanted to try one for the weekend as it is a large invenstment and want to make sure it is right for me. Anyway, ended up going to two different dealers plus a complaint to the customer services to get a drive for a day.

Contrast:

Walked in to an Audi dealer today and was immediately offered a weekend test drive. Snapped it up and have postponed the fl2 test drive for another time.

What a difference in dealerships

Just to let you know I am testing the A6Q estate

Why don't you just hire one for the weekend if you want to be certain it is right for you?

I really don't see why dealers should be expected to offer a free weekend loan of cars to everyone that asks, do you?

Maybe Audi have to work a little bit harder to sell their cars? wink
It's called a Demonstrator, and they all have them. Usually they try and keep them for themselves to drive smile But they are provided by the manufacture just for the purpose of demonstrating the car to the customer.

If they only have one do you really think they want it tied up all weekend with a single customer?
Would depend if you wanted to sell me one or not hehe

Like you have been a to the dealerships involved, do you mean?

Until you started whinging about the dealer's attitude just because they wouldn't honour a totally unreasonable request, most of us gave you that advice that you asked for - an overwhelming majority in favour of the Freelander, in fact. You then had a demonstration drive and still you think you should have a free car for the weekend? What were you expecting to discover about the car over the weekend that you either hadn't heard on here and during the demo? If you can't make your mind up, and want to avoid an expensive mistake, just put your money where your mouth is and hire a car for a weekend - don't expect it for nothing.

Are you like this with everything you buy? Did you have a poll on here and then ask to take your TV home for the weekend before you decided to buy it? Or your kitchen appliances? and did you 'test-drive' your house before you bought it? (Reckon a house would have to be at least a fortnight, if a car requires a weekend wink)
Err do I know you? Seems all you want is a slagging match. Go back to your hole!

Please correct me if I am wrong (as I am sure you will smile) but is not the XC90 an all wheel drive and the FL2 a 4 wheel drive. Big difference.
