Hmm would prefer without a remote control if possible. I know Clarks shoes have little lights on the heels and a very tiny dot in the heel where you can turn them on and off (I embarrassingly took them back to Clarks as they didn't work.... and was then shown the on/off button )

Good idea! Yes it may be something custom made as, like you, I was getting christmas lights.

Or search for 'LED battery flasher' there are other suppliers available. They do last around 8 weeks but go dim after a while and will need changing.
