I have been following the various torch threads we have on here and have mostly had cheap torcjes which I use in my job as a surveyor and when walking the dog. And then I decided to take the plunge and on then strength of a review in a walking magazine one of these popped through the letterbox yesterday.

It's BRILLIANT....

I turned into a kid and wanted to do evrything at home last night by torchlight. For a double AA torch to be putting out 245 lumens is impressive enough on paper, but taking my black dog out down a dark lane it was wonderful! This whole torch game is potentially addictive!

And a note of recommendation for http://www.ledfiretorches.co.uk/index.php

what good service in terms of delivery speed and communication.

Oh don't think I haven't looked at those, and ones like it, while licking my lips and saying “I really NEED one of those”.

Stay away you evil tempter!

was thinking the same. i do(nt) need a new torch for work, might treat myself.
To be honest I went for the one in the OP because it seems to offer a lot of performance for the money. I could SO easily have spent load ore quids, but figured sub £35 was a not unreasonable indulgance!

And its fabulous!

However the one which punches well above its weight for compact size, lightness, brightness (200 lumens) and battery life (130 hours from 4 AAA) is the Lenser P7. But, this is the best part of £40.

The Klarus looks like a decent bit of kit - my only concern being battery life. But what the hell - I may get one anyway. smile
I was originally heading for a P7 but got swayed by the review I mentioned. Not used it enough to comment on battery life, but who cares....they're only AA's.

Ooo, I like that sort of deal and will visit that virtual emporium shortly. Good recommendation!

As an aside, are Duracell actually the best batteries to use in these little uber-torches?

Edit: they also have Power-Stations AA alkeline for £7 for 40 delivered? Which should it be....or both!

To extend the discussion a little.

My old and battered 4D Maglite has been with me for years and used to be my torch of choice. Some years ago I changed the bulb for a maglite LED upgrade. Back then I was oh so innocent of the torchnerd sub-specis that I feel myself sliding towards. I tried the torch last might to compare with my new toys and frankly, I may as well have used a tea light in a jar.

So, question. Can I upgrade the maglite, what's best to do, will it cost me loads, where do I get the bits, where can I find a 'how to' and anything else that I should know! Or should I not bother?

Oh god......she's gonna kill me.

"blah, blah blah....more bloody torch stuff....blah, blah blah"

Doesn't she know how important this stuff is?! I mean, what's the point in an LED upgrade if you don't change the glass eh?

I find having a black dog that needs to be walked late at night, down dark lanes legitimises ANY torch purchase.

Mind you, she weqars her flashing LED collar with considerable pride as well.

Good fun just to watch flashing red lights dart from bush to bush!

I like that and I think I'll have one.

What's the best thing to do with the 18650 batteries? In terms of buying some I mean.

It's early and I'm a bit bleary eyed. Stands to reason that I'm looking (again) and torches that I might like.

Are there good buys here do 'we' think?

have either of you got your hands on this yet? it seems too good to be true at that price.
Not yet, but will post a review when it does.

Well I got mine today smile

It is a mighty impressive piece of kit and I can thoroughly recommend it. I shall get some pictures and try and provide a 'simple' review later on.

The light from this is staggering - 3 x LEDs does make a difference.
Hopefully mine will arrive soon too then. My appetite is well and truely whetted!

piccies?
Mine had arrived when I got home yesterday.

Very well packaged by the way.

My first 18650 batteried (?) torch.

My word, what a fabulous bit of kit. The charger is adequate rather than top quality but does the job. The batteries were charged when delivered though. The torch itself feels great to me, the extended body section has a fine thread connection and when batteries are in and all screwed up it feels to be of good quality.

Boy is it bright! So far it's only been used to illuminate the dog having a poo 30m away while standing at the back door, but that showed just how impressive the power is. I don't have experience of the Olight torch that this has been compared to, but from my perspective it's staggering value for money.

By the way; the torch takes 3 batteries, the charger has 2. I rather like the idea of a charger that would take 3 (or 4) at a time. Any recommendations?

All in all I have no hesitation in recommending these.

Whilst browsing Maplin on Saturday whilst waiting for Mothercare to open (don't ask!) I found these on sale.

I got a pack of 4 2000mAh AA batteries for one of my torches and a 2 battery charger with 2 batteries.

All seemed like a very good price and I didn't like the charger that came with my others.

Sale ends this week.
