So with the official release of this getting closer, I thought I'd start a new thread so as not to derail or dilute the One thread.

The first images are out, @evleaks was first to the punch and is a reputable source:

The hardware keys are now on-screen (a first for HTC) and in line with 'pure' Android devices. I think it's a good thing, I've found it more convenient to have the keys migrate to the bottom of the screen in landscape mode on my Nexus 7.

Rumoured to be coming in silver, grey and gold. Here's the rumoured silver:

and the front of the grey:

First shots of what's rumoured to be Sense 6.0:

and apparently a 5.0" display (good in my book, I wouldn't want much larger on a phone).

Spec-wise here's what appears to be an AnTuTu test result for the M8:

Unless Samsung really pull it out of the bag with the S5 (and it's metal chassis'd), the new One will be my next phone when I come off-contract at the end of March.

I'll have mine in grey please!

I'll be coming from a One X and I've had no issues at all with reliability from a build perspective, including a couple of drops (par for the course these days unfortunately, although a case helps enormously). I'm running 4.4.2 and Sense 5.0 (pinched from the One) which runs beautifully.

After years of 'on-contract' phones, I was frustrated with waiting for OTA updates from T-Mobile for the firmware - a right faff. I'll be getting a new phone on contract and instantly selling it on, adding that money to the money from my One X and getting the 'new One' I think. My tariff on T-M is an old Friends and Family one so it's really rather good VFM so it makes sense to get a 'free' phone out of it and I wouldn't be letting the tariff go anyway so happy to renew.

Really quite excited to see the final specs and official pictures from HTC on the 25th (given their marketing ramp-up, it seems that MWC will be the platform for launch - I only hope they don't have a huge gap between that and the in-shop dates).

Yep, 4.7 currently, same as the One X.

There are also many who don't really care about the camera truth be told. It's certainly not high on my list of priorities and wouldn't be enough for me to dismiss the phone (or choose one on the basis of the camera being 'better' either).

Besides, people have these amazing cameras and then use apps to make the picture look really stty. It's bizarre.

I've been watching the leaks for the 'M8' with great interest.

Currently I have a Galaxy S3, which was my first foray into Android. Good phone, but a little slow now.

Two of my friends got HTC Ones last year and it really is a fantastic looking phone. I suppose the main things that draw me to the HTC are the screen quality, the front facing speakers and the metal chassis.

The only negative I can think of is that one of my mates has had to send his back for repair 3 times due to the speakers breaking.

The new one is due out just before my contract ends, so I am really looking forward to this. Seen quite a few rumours that it's likely to have expandable memory, which is a huge positive for me.
Just to counter, two of my friends and 3 of my colleagues have Ones which have all been faultless...

The other key point is the performance of the camera in lower light - something where the One is ahead of most other cameraphones imo.

How good do they need to get? These were taken on my One X, so 'old' tech now. I was particularly impressed with it capturing the fireworks so well given the dark/light fluctuation, as well as focussing etc:

These were both straight off the camera, auto-uploaded into Dropbox so no editing or tweaking.

The HTC One (M8) will feature two cameras on the rear of the device, Pocket-lint can confirm.

Talking to sources familiar with the matter, Pocket-lint has learnt that the new flagship smartphone from HTC, due to be announced on 25 March, will still feature the same camera sensor that is in the 2013 HTC One but with also a second 2-megapixel camera sensor.

The job of the second camera will be to enhance bokeh and enable users to replace the background in any picture they take.

Bokeh (pronounced bo-kay) is the blur, or the beauty of the blur in the out-of-focus elements of a photo and it is something many portrait photographers strive for. It gives a greater sense of depth to photos and helps the subject have a lot more "punch".

The new technology benefits will be captured and controlled via an app HTC is currently working on. The system will be the first of its kind on a smartphone, but looks to work in a similar way to a dual-camera prototype Toshiba demonstrated before Christmas.

Hearing that this isn't going to be announced at MWC next week but on 25th March...

I can see why they might defer, the S5's announcement has the potential to drown out the new One. That said, I do think they need to beat Samsung to market to be in with a shot of success.

Also hearing rumors of an HTC smart watch by Christmas...

OK, so the new S5 is still plastic; unless it feels seriously nice in the hand, I think it's ruled out for me on that alone. Great spec though:

  • 5.1" screen Full HD Super Amoled
  • Android 4.4
  • Quad Krait 2.5GHz processor
  • 16MP camera
  • 142x72.5x8.1mm
  • 145g
  • USB 3 charging
  • Dustproof and waterproof: IP67
  • 2800mAh battery
Also apparently has a good fingerprint sensor that can be used not only for unlocking but also as a password replacement. It can also combine WiFi and 4G for ultra-fast connection speeds which is quite clever - however, I fail to see why anyone REALLY needs speeds faster than 3G/4G? I'd rather see improvements in coverage/battery life than faster internet speeds to be honest.

HTC have finally sent out invites to an event on the 25th March which is highly likely to be their announcement date for the New One - interestingly the S5 should be available late March/early April so it's possible it'll get ahead on the sales front.

I'm pretty sure I won't be going for the S5 and looking forward to seeing what HTC come up with...

To be honest, I don't think the reader should need a swipe. It ought to be static like the iPhone although that's probably patented somewhere to stop anyone else using it.

I read an article last night that said it was difficult to access one handed and if you didn't swipe it in a particular way it wouldn't read your fingerprint.

I'll see if I can find the article.
Just watched a video of the scanner; what a pain in the backside place to have to swipe! Your thumb is at the wrong angle so it becomes a two handed affair plus you have to wake the phone first with the power button?

I'm afraid Apple got this right, none of the Android phones I've seen so far have a fingerprint scanner I'd ever use. The one on the back of the One Max is better positioned than the Samsung one of one must drag a finger rather than simply place a digit on the sensor.

Reading about that leaked M8 video the kid/kids dad is about to get a massive bking from HTC. Highly secret DEV handset, IMEI numbers on full display etc...

I got 2 minutes in before turning it off before I had to post in the 'Things that annoy you beyone reason' thread!
HTC's bods have been tweeting him and saying "It's not going to be a good week for you, my friend." The article suggests he's already cost his parent their job at HTC and there will be a court case in the offing.

No leak is worth that, although you have to question why the parents weren't keeping a closer eye on that dev unit when it's meant to be ultra secret...!

If I was given a highly anticipated dev unit I'd keep it bloody secret too!

Plus, surely the first time his finger slipped off the sticker, or when he fked up and moved the camer he would just restart the video and try again. What did he record it on, one time only VHS?
Idiots are as stupid do.

I'm hearing rumours that the announcement-to-launch time with the new One will be kept short; a good move if so, however I'm sure we'd have heard something from the manufacturers in the Far East about 'ramping up production' etc - can't be easy to keep a lid on things like that.

So, on the shortlist are the new One and the Z2 although the Z2 has a hefty price tag!
