Naive question - could the performance issues I have been experiencing (slow running, unresponsive keys, scrolling through screens etc on its own...) be caused by my not switching it off (After being switched off it seems like all's well until it gradually slows etc during the ensuing hours and days) or is that just a figment of my imagination?

...or is it plain faulty?

It is, isn't it - a bit "full on".

A bit of a tale of two halves since the upgrade - still a little reluctant to respond to the unlock screen, but definitely better once you're in. Battery life was already good, but it now seems extraordinary, barely running down at all.

I'll carry on fiddling, and in particular moving some apps to the card and see if that improves things further.

Nop, it's ridiculous, I'm sitting here watching it cycling through network connections entirely on its own, bringing up password screens, icons, emoticons, the works.

Damn thing's a liability.

Started off fine for a week or so, then got unresponsive, then had an epiphany and was fine for 3 weeks and now it's just hopeless.

Still scrolling, although it seems to be getting tired as it's doing it more slowly...

Hold down the power button and when Device Options pops up press on the power off option until the "Reboot to safe mode" dialog pops up.
Yep, but I don't get that option, all I get when I touch power off is and OK or Cancel screen?

Sound like a hardware (touch screen) problem to me. To confirm this you can do a couple of things. Reboot into safe mode and see if the problem goes away (in which case it's a dodgy app. You can also download YAMTT form the play store to see if you get ghost touches. Make sure you clean the screen before trying this.
Nope, navigation keys at bottom are unresponsive in Safe Mode. Other stuff works, but they need me to press power button to get them going again.

Now frozen again. Power press screen off/on and they're working again.

It's knackered, isn't it?

Which is simply what will happen if I send it for repair, I guess.

Even if there was a significant period in its young life when it worked perfectly with it on?

OK, I'll give it a go. Don't have it with me today, so will play around over the weekend and see what happens, thanks.

Some catious optimism this morning - film's off and it's behaving itself...but that's been the case before, so I'll give it a decent go.

I was just coming on to post an update.

Still some erratic running - keys not responding intermittently (took perhaps 6 goes before it would accept my security code this am, for instance), doing eccentric things, so I think it will have to go back, which is a pain, but hey-ho.

Factory reset first, do you think?

So, factory reset and still it ran like a dog - same issues of keys being unresponsive and performing random actions on its own.

It offered a firmware update last night which I accepted and since then it has been flawless. I assume there must be a connection?

...so it couldn't be repaired, it was refunded, I bought another, Amazon stumped up the difference between the old and the new price, and I got a brand new unit, not a refurb. Only slight downside is that my Micro SD doesn't look like it's going to be returned from my old unit.

...and this one seems to be working fine - so far.
