Another stupid Mac question

If I connect a Mac Book Pro to an iPad Pro via a lightning cable, will I be able to transfer files both ways?

Why can't I just drag a file from one folder to another like any normal FTP. Bloody hate iTunes, me.

Apple doesn't really like wired transfers.

The files are several Gb in size… guess it's an overnight Dropbox
