AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 5600+ 2.80GHz
or
Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 2.66GHz (1333FSB)

I am thinking of buying a new computer (base unit is coming pre-built, I just install the software on it) and the above is one of the options for processor.

If any of you super-helpful people wish to help me out - you can spec me a rig! Baseunit only, Maximum cost of about £500 (inc vat and delivery).

Don't care where it comes from (obviously not back-of-lorry.com smile)

As for prices, the two systems I looked at were more or less evenly matched in terms of price - the CPU was the difference between them though.

I am tempted to go for the Intel chip because, as you say, it is the better chip in the end.

I can't be bothered in overclocking either. i like to have a nice, fast pc that can do what i want it to do.

at the moment, i got me an athlon 64 3500+ (skt 939). bought because it was good and fast. prior to that, i had an intel 3.2 ghz (prescott) which was actually OK!!! prior to that, i had a 3.0 ghz northwood p4, which i managed to overclock to 4ghz stable. lovley, but short lived - it wasn't as stable as i thought and died like a year later.

now, i cant be arsed overclocking. i just want a fast and stable pc to game and surf with. this rig has lasted me well for like 3+ years without an overclock, but has finally died due to the pixies leaving home.
