I'm looking for an r class under 9k I've searched on here, auto trader, eBay and exchange and mart. Am I missing anywhere? I know they didn't sell in huge numbers but nothing is floating my boat that's less than 150 miles away

I travelled from Kent to Cheshire to get mine, as has been said there aren't that many about so you may have to travel to find the right one, autotrader seems to have the biggest choice. I'm going to be putting mine up for sale in the next week or so, near Bromley in Kent so not far from you if you're still looking, although I'll be looking for £11k. Happy to chat about what they're like and show you round mine if you want, I'm no expert but have got to know my local Merc specialist quite well while sorting out a couple of issues with it and happy to pass on my experiences.
Cheers, Kitsell
Unfortunately 9k is my absolute top whack, what issues have you been having with yours?

Yeah I'm quite wary of the air suspension, seems to be the only real achilles heal. I viewed one last week that I found on AT but it was a short wheel base otherwise I would have had that one. It was good spec, just over 100k with only 2 keepers and one of those was mercedes. So far swmbo has insisted on coming with me to view and as she's now 4 months pregnant with number 4 spending all day travelling to look at cars wasn't really floating her boat. If we don't find one local in the next 2 weeks I'll be viewing on my own and therefore able to travel further.

They all have self levelling air suspension on the rear.

We've had an issue with the HK audio gateway failing that is situated under the passenger seat.
Also a rear shock and some glow plugs giving up.

Apart from that, it eats through tyres and fuel as you can imagine from a big heavy 4wd.
To be honest i'm not worried about MPG or tyre usage as I only cover about 4-5K per year. It can't be any worse on fuel than my 530i, especially if we get a diesel. I did not realise they all had air suspension on the back, I thought it was all round or nothing?

Ours has air on the back, i'm pretty confident they are all set up like this, the same as the E class estate.
Full airmatic all round was an expensive option so not many about with that.

For such low mileage the mpg is never an issue. Our has really surprised us us.
It is considerably worse than the E320cdi estate it replaced and it is slightly worse than the ML270 cdi that the E class estate replaced.
Average steady long motorway drive is low 30mpg. Stop start round town traffic it can dip under 20mpg.
Our is a CDI.

Always worth every penny for all the passenger space available though.
Mpg is a little worse than my 5 series then, we need the 6th seat soon and I didn't fancy a Vauxhall or Ford and to be honest the 3rd row of seats in those look like emergency/used once in a blue moon type affairs. The R class seats look more permanent use seats with proper leg room.

Yeah, full size adults still won't be entirely happy in the last row but most teenagers/smaller adults are ok going back there. Much more room for the last seats than pretty much anything else apart from our old V class.

If you keep growing at this rate, you may need to find the 7 seat option from a breaker!
I'm only intending for kids back there my boys are 9, 5 and 3 with another due end of august and after that I'm being disconnected ha

Yeah i've already been thinking about that, plans so far are oldest on the back row on a booster, new one next to him on an isofix base, current youngest in the middle row and current middle child next to him on a booster seat which uses the belt to secure him so that seat can be lifted out with ease

I have one of the MB boosters with the transponder in to turn the passenger front airbag off. They can be picked up from ebay for £30ish.

Means my oldest can travel up front and adults are all happy to travel in the "executive" (middle) row...
Ok thanks, i'll keep an eye out for one of those

All mercs run a cam chain. The tensioner can go slack on this V6 CDI and cause a rattling but they are not known for giving up completely.
OK thanks, is that just a case of replacing the tensioner or does that bugger up other stuff?
