A trifling amount for the petrol heads here, I know, but I'm after a second car that I can fit the family in (2x2) in comfort, and want to buy something distinctive and a pleasure to drive. I'm thinking about one of the old w124's as they were built to last, but is getting something like that rather than a second hand MPV a false economy? I'm told the 95-95 E class Mercs should last forever if well serviced, but will the cost of those services plus higher fuel consumption not make a difference to my pocket?

Also, the ones I am looking at are around 150k mileage (not bad for the age!) - I only need it for around 10k miles per year, so still a good idea? Pros and cons much appreciated, thank you.

thanks - I have seen the w124 website, shame your only car for sale is out of my price range....I'm just around the corner in Lewes.

Should I worry about the 150k+ mileage on many of the cars for sale out there? And am I right to be concerned about servicing costs?

thanks - feeling a lot better about this. Next stop - persuading wife she should be driving an older Merc rather than a newer Scenic/Zafira....
