1950's Merc SL - Bringing her back to life (and up to date)
Discussion
Thanks for the comments guys. Work is slow, but steady.
Those wheels look interesting... I think too many spokes though. Where are they, and what sizes are they (i've not got much room to play with and I'm not going to be messing about with the a restored shell).

God, that is alot of weight... I'm not sure if my little 1.9L will tug those round... or if the drums will stop them?!
I have removed the foor and boot floor, I also opened up all the struts and re-blasting inside them. Lots of welding! So far so good... but it is taking a very long time.

I shall have to update the thread! Well progress has been slow, but in four days I will leaving work to spend 3 solid weeks on this car, so things should start to happen.
The running gear is now painted and ready to fit up, the underside is painted and re furbished + painted fuel tank is fitted. The inside and engine bay are now finished and painted. Much of the re-chroming has been done, new shocks purchased, soft top frame mid refurb, panels ready to prime, door glass cleaned + light tint, old style hardtop purchased (so 2 hard tops now), new loom arrived by not fitted... and lots of other smaller boring bits
I'll get a few snaps up, and then keep you guys updated. I've spent most Saturday's on this project... so less than one day a week (with setup and clean down each time). These solid weeks should be just what the car needs
Thanks for the nudge

P.s JC,the car cost just under 20k in this state.

Dream... or nightmare? I'm not some days! I know I'll look back at it as 'a dream fulfilled' (and thats why I decided to jump in head first), but this project has both its high's and extreme low's... it just a question of balancing them, and learning very quickly.
I'm not really keeping tabs on costs (because it is what it is, and I'm in too deep not to complete), but the car cost just under 20k, and I must have spent 5-7k on top of that so far with parts, blasting and materials etc. I have heard of people spending up to 200k on these cars (for concurs) but I'm trying to do it for 10k or less (and to a very high standard).
I couldnt do it without forum guidance from the SL pros, and alot of help from a rather gifted friend of mine (who the car will be named after once complete).
I've never done anything like this before... and I wont be doing it again, but I wouldn't change it for the world.

I'm far from skilled (thank you though)... the man behind the paint gun, and my 'mentor' is the skilled one. I've certainly learnt alot though... I've had to.
I'm glad you all like the project so far! Just having a breather before another push to get it rolling on its subframe and wheels.

Your car still looks great! If I hadnt put myself off resto's I'd love to get one of those one day.
Excuse the lack of updates. Loom is in, car has been flatted back, some panels are polished and finished. Carbs are looking like new...
I'll get some pics up soon, but off the Ring this weekend to break the TVR
Dont be jealous... its a mega burden/money pit!
