Something a bit different which you'll hopefully enjoy? Flew to Barra and back this week, lovely place and apparently the only scheduled airline destination which uses a beach as the runway





Great little trip in a Twin Otter, not that expensive either. Flight back to Glasgow was delayed due to the very high tide this week, that doesn't happen at Heathrow!

Totally feasible by all accounts.

This service has been in operation since at least the mid 1930s. It was pioneered by Railway Air Services (I think) and taken up by British European AIrways (BEA) in the late 1940s. The original aircraft used was the De Havilland Dragon Rapide. In the early 1960s, these were replaced by De Havilland Herons. When BEA was absorbed by the new British Airways in 1974, they gave up the route and it was taken over by the independent airline Loganair, initially with Britten Norman Islanders and later De Havilland Canada Twin Otters. They operate the service to this day.

Very interesting Eric.

The landing and takeoff didn't seem to be affected by the water. Both were very short runs and very smooth.

The beach is firm and the wheels didn't seem to sink in at all. Lots of splashing though!

The usual suspects have been covered but Bill Gunston had a few nice things to say about the Shinden, with more development it could have been an awesome prop fighter and possibly an impressive jet one too.
