Many thanks

I'll add my support for limewire. I still buy cds but i often take music from here to "try" it on my ipod first.

I just dont like the idea of buying music without having something like a CD to show for it, sad in this digital age I know.

Limewire is a filesharing network, much the same as Kazza is/was its illegal to download copyrighted tunes from it but the chances of getting caught are somewhere between slim and non existant. Bittorrents are also illegal if you use them for downloading copyrighted material but again theres very little chance of getting caught. Or you can go to sites such as sony connect and a myriad of others and pay for the privelege of downloading the tunes. Generally the RIAA and MPAA who do most of the prosecutuions are generally after people who upload tunes in the first place or in the case of torrents, the websites who post links to the torrents such as www.torrentspy.com or www.thepiratebay.org who were recently raided despite not even being based in America! Incedently they still havent been shutdown. isohunt.com are another who are constantly being harrassed but are based in Canada where peer to peer file sharing is allowed under law, or at least not specifically prohibited.

You can't use music on your IPOD bought from online music stores other than ITUNES because APPLE does not want you to benefit from competition in the trade. Honestly, I wonder why people rate the IPOD's features over freedom of choice.

When you want to have music on your IPOD that is not available at ITUNES, you'll have to buy a CD and rip it to have it legally, or just download it illegally as suggested in other posts

Under UK copyright rules ripping your own CD to an iPod is also illegal.

Is it?

As long as you own the media I was under the impression that it was perfectly legal to take backups of that media in any format you choose.

Technically, I think it is still illegal. However, Apple are unlikely to dob you in as being seen to target file sharers would probably destroy ipod sales overnight. I doubt that there is anybody I know that does not have at least a few illegally copied songs on theirs......

Currently it is illegal, but will become legal during the current parliament - it was in the Queens speech and has been discussd by a minister on R4 IIRC

Pity for the UK. I'm allowed up to seven private copies in my close periphery

I officially suggest stealing music where private copies are restricted. Why bother buying a CD for UK use, when it's illegal to use on an MP3 player?

Err, the iPod uses industry standard MP3, AAC, WAV and AIFF formats. If 'your' download shop chooses not to use any of these formats then it is hardly Apple's fault. rolleyes

If YOU choose not to use the best due to some anti-Apple bias fine, but don't spout utter crap here. There are plenty of other forums for ill-informed censored

(...although I guess for owning a cool car, I'll let you off ... hippy)

As you call me an "ill-informed censored", I'd love to hear from you, why it is not APPLE's fault that other download stores don't offer music with ITUNES' Fairplay DRM, and why APPLE doesn't offer an alternative DRM on the IPOD.

Was deciding between and IPOD Video or an Archos 504 MP4 player. Both 80gb and the same price.

Went for the latter instead.

Nice Christmas Present

I did also give a hippy so hopefully my comments wouldn't be taken (totally) the wrong way, however... Apple don't offer an alternative DRM'd format as they have chosen AAC. I don't know of any other MP3 player that offers multiple DRM'd formats, why should Apple? I hate DRM'd music as much as anyone, but at least the iPod plays many other formats. Locking people into a preparatory format (ie: Windows Media) is a far worse offence.

I agree with your other comments on this thread - so take back the 'ill-informed' bit if I may?

Yeah, you can.

All the stuff I've bought from www.bleep.com works just fine, ta very much.

The only DRMed music you can play on your iPod is from iTunes, true enough.

But there are music shops on t'internet that don't do DRM and simply serve you plain ol' MP3 files, which work just fine.

And the "spout utter crap" please too, while you're at it

My background is that Apple's FairPlay-DRM is used to lock users to the itunes-system, although this wouldn't be necessary. The hardware itself is not worse than the competitor's albeit with an excellent styling.
I'm not a friend of DRM either; mainly because it is used to cut consumer's freedoms, more than the securing artist's rights, as it seems. I'm mentioning especially Apple since the OP wanted an alternative to iTunes. Other MP3-player manufacturers use DRM as well, but this (anybody know which? Microsoft?) one more widely available at online download-stores; hence allowing a more direct competition in trade.

The iPod of course plays many formats, however you'd need to rip them from CD, since the big record companies only allow music to be sold online legally when it is restricted. (I'd love to hear the opposite. anyone?)
