BMW Launches eBay Shop

BMW direct becomes the first car manufacturer to set up an eBay parts service in the UK

BMW has launched an online parts service via eBay UK, the first car manufacturer to do so.

The new service is called BMW Direct, and its online parts service joins a line-up of accessories and car-care products that have been on sale since March.

The 'shopfront' is to be handled by BMW, while the order processing is being dealt with by BMW Park Lane.

BMW's first venture into e-commerce will, says BMW allow it "to reach those customers not accustomed to visiting a BMW dealer regularly".

"eBay UK is home to over 100 leading brands who realise the added value an eBay shop brings, whether they are already selling online or not," says Angus McCarey, UK retail director of eBay. "There are over 600,000 searches for BMW every month on eBay and BMW will now be able to access this existing, yet untapped customer base, while increasing its reach to the millions of other consumers who buy and sell on the site."

Those customers won't, as yet, be able to buy whole cars direct from BMW via eBay, however - and the car maker says it has to plans to sell its vehicles in this way.

So even more "noise" to filter through when we're looking for auction items on eBay.

I hate the way that eBay is turning into just an enormous love child of Amazon and Exchange & Mart. I don't want to have to filter through pages and pages of companys advertising their new products at retail prices, with their inflated P&P charges .... That's not what an auction site is about!

If I wanted to pay RRP for something, I'd go to a shop, or to the shops website.

I know it'll never happen, but I'd love eBay to be "cleaned out", and become an out and out auction site. No "buy it now", no "reserve", no "classified ads", no "company ads", no auction retractions ..... Just auctions where people can put their stuff on there, other people can look at it, bid what they want to pay, and it sells to the highest bidder at no matter what that price may be. That's how all of my sales on ebay are listed!

Who's next on the soap box? wink

To be fair to them though....some of the prices are pretty reasonable. A set of brake pads for an E46 3 Series are pretty comparable to Euro Car Parts. Some of the other stuff is more expensive, but for someone who wants to guarantee they're using OEM stuff....

Yes, I can see this having it's uses, and BTW P&P appears to be 'FREE' on all items/pages I've just flicked through.

Just looking through E46 brake disks, Brembo's for £80, or genuine BMW for £96.... no brainer IMO.

In all honesty, their prices are not as bad as people think.

I have recently ordered some temperature sensors for my Dad's E39 530i Sport, and they were a few quid cheaper from a BMW Dealer, compared to Euro Car Parts and GSF.

Yes - certain items are very expensive, especially alot of the 'dealer only' parts.

Servicing - yes, much more expensive than in independent, and not much better if you have a good indie.

However - do you not think that they will keep prices slightly lower than over-the-counter, due to having less overheads, etc?

BMW's move should be welcomed. Hope other car makers also follow BMW.
Its pure business interests are clear. We can find plenty of BMW parts online

Just looking to see if I can find a cost for a Performance Exhaust for the 135. Still pi$$ed at BMW for increasing the cost just at the point where I had saved up for one. 40% price increase is a joke. I am not paying £1000.

Everything I checked on this site is simply dealer list price - ie, the price you'd pay if you walked into your local dealer off the street and paid RRP without any discount.

Makes it fundamentally pointless, whats the point in buying from BMW Direct when you can just pick it up same day same price from your local dealer?

The whole point in Ebay shops is supposed to be value, where is the value here?

I suppose the value is that you don't have to go to your local dealer or pick up the phone. The value is that you can buy online.

I cant see many people valuing the convenience of buying online over popping to the local dealer, most of whom give a bit of discount, when choosing a £2800 wheel and tyre set.

Agreed unless you live miles away from a dealer or you happen to dislike your local dealer.

Also most people using this new facility won't be spending ££££'s on the more expensive items. If I was after a set of brake pads I would use it.

The value is free P&P, not having to drive to the dealer etc.

Its a good idea, shame parts aren't say 5% cheaper than over the counter though.

Plus this should be run from somewhere with good stock, every time I've ordered bits from BMW (or Honda for that matter), even the basics aren't available off the shelf, and its involved a second trip to collect the bits...

Just goes to show how crap eBay has become over the years. Gumtree is mush better, and free. I brought an iPhone of gumtree, the seller was local, 5min from my house, and I picked up the phone that day.

Gumtree is full of scammers. Try to buy a motorcycle on Gumtree, and I reckon you've got about a 10% chance of finding one that isn't a scam.

Ebay is good for that kind of thing though.
