Pic Of The Week: Jenson At Monaco

Rejoice - F1 returns to its spiritual heartland

If you looked at it with a cold head and a hard heart, it would be easy to conclude that the Monaco GP (happening this very weekend) is an outdated anachronism that doesn't fit in with 21st century Formula One.

And yet...after a series of races on sparkly new but all too clinical racetracks in far flung corners of the globe, the return of the F1 circus to the little principality on the Med feels like F1 coming home (of course it is home to a large portion of the F1 field).

The unique challenge of negotiating those tricky city streets is also what makes victory in the Monaco GP one of the most coveted prizes in world motorsport, right up there with Le Mans or the Indy 500.

So to celebrate F1 coming back to Monte Carlo, here's Jenson Button negotiating the distinctive Loew's Hairpin - pretty much the slowest corner in F1. Here's hoping he and Lewis can start to reel in that pesky German Vettel this weekend...

Update: Due to (un)popular demand (there was mild disgruntlement in some quarters about the general fuzziness of the original image) we've decided to lob in a bonus POTW (right).

This still evokes the atmosphere and spirit of the Monaco GP (we hope) but this time does so with a greater degree of focus.

Now don't say we never do anything for you...

So let me get this right.

We have returned from a far flung corner of the globe, from clinical circuits where overtaking is historically difficult giving many dull races for spectators, designed for sponsors and high rollers...

...to another circuit in Europe, designed for sponsors and high rollers where overtaking is nigh on impossible often producing a dull race for spectators.

I will keep the champagne on ice till Spa thank you.

Pics like this make me a little sad inside, it's not that hard (relatively speaking) to get a dynamic blurry shot with the car still in a reasonable amount of focus.

Me neither - I didn't want to sound like a photography bd, but there is not one single part of that picture that's in focus. That person was lucky enough to be in THAT exact spot and that was the best they could do?

Shame - I'm nothing better than an amateur, but even I would have deleted that shot from my HD when reviewing my shots.

Well... the race has been run since 1929 and, to (probably inadvisably) quote Wikipedia

"it is widely considered to be one of the most important and prestigious automobile races in the world, alongside the Indianapolis 500 and the 24 Hours of Le Mans (informally known as the Triple Crown of Motorsport). The circuit has been called "an exceptional location of glamour and prestige."

Always gets me excited - even if there ain't a great deal of overtaking

And... to all those who rightly point out that the image isn't exactly pin-sharp, our apologies - I picked 'cos I felt it was a pleasantly evocative image and would make a nice background wallpaper for many a desktop.

I promise to root out a sharper image as a little extra POTW at some point this afternoon - so keep your eyes peeled... smile

Awful photo! The spirit of monaco is the tracks proximity to the buildings so why blur them?

Would have been better if it was Hamilton

Reasons for my dislike towards Button:
- Said he was the best driver ever in GQ magazine
- Last race he said he was open to new opportunities before the race when quizzed about his team
- Pulled up in the leader pit
- Can't grow a beard
- Sight of him generally annoys me, especially his stupid, undeserved grin

Rant over, it's Friday :-)
