Having a spare afternoon I popped along to Bonham's fine watch auction at Bond St. I hadn't been to a sale in years. There was a fine selection of pieces; vintage, late model, complications and gold/diamond set goods. Patek and Lange & Sohne sold well, with a few notable highlights.

Lot 149 A unique platinum Patek minute repeating split chrono. Sold at £78,000 inc.

Lot 184. A Rolex 5513 Military issue Submariner. Watch has seen action by father and son in the British Army. Sold at £39,600.

Lot 215. A Patek 5970J perpetual chrono. Sold at £90,000 inc.

Lot 240. An 18ct gold Vintage Rolex Daytona 6263. Sold at £33,600 inc.

Lot 251. A fine 18ct Rolex triple calender ref 6062. Sold at £38,400 inc.

Lot 252. A rare Rolex Submariner with 'Explorer' dial. Sold at £40,800 inc.

Lot 261. A stunning Breguet Tourbillon in platinum. Sold at £36,000 inc.

Lot 262. A perfect Patek 5101P Platinum Tourbillon. Sold at £168,000 inc.

Lot 280. My favourite, a beautiful Lange & Sohne Platinum perpetual calender with chronograph. Sold at £45,600 to a bloke in ripped jeans!

There were others, these were just a few that grabbed me. wink

I was sat next to a couple of the big bidders, and had an itchy nose. I didn't dare move for fear of out bidding the buggers!

Yep, loving the complications. The Lange, the Patek 5970 and the Breguet Tourbillon Reserve de Marche for me were the stand out pieces.....

I spent yesterday morning with a mate who'd just bought a 458 Italia, which totally re-defined my understanding of performance motoring. Then this afternoon I was knee deep in these beauties. Believe me, when the six numbers drop in, I know exactly where the first £400k is going.... wink

There must have been issues with it for it to fall at that sort of money?!
Certainly looks to have had the fixed bars removed, but even so, that doesn't seem nearly enough money for a 'full spec' example with that sort of provenance!

I just thought it was quite sad that something with that much family history is being sold on, no matter what an earner it is!

Agreed, I though this would be £50k+. Maybe, the market is waking up to alternatives. Consider the 18ct Triple Date 6062 at the same money, or the Lange & Sohne at another couple of grand. I know Milisub/Comex/Paul Newman are considered the 'Holy Trinity' for Rolex collectors. But when you actually handle watches like the Lange Datograph that sold at £45,600 (rrp over £100k), this is what you're buying..

Given £46k which would you buy?.....

Completely agree Dom.
The 5517 is gorgeous, but maybe you're right, maybe the bubble has burst for silly priced collector's Rolexs? scratchchin
That 6062 is stunning as well, I'm amazed that Rolex don't make anything comparable nowadays.

ETA And I would have thought that Submariner (assuming the lack of fixed bars is the only mod from original condition & everything else is original to the watch) would have been knocking on 6 figures.

Not a fan of moonphase or yellow gold. But I really like these. In the unlikely, in fact all but impossible, event that I ever have 90k to spend on a watch, I'm in smile

That Rolex triple date is lovely.

They should do more of that and less DSSD.

Re the Gold Daytonas, if gold watches were at the height of fashion right now, would that have gone for more ? Or at this price level is the going rate not affected by trend ?

Another question, is it possible to attend a high end watch auction without thinking about *that* episode of Only Fools and Horses ?

Absolutely.
The more I look at older Rolexs the more I think I have no interest in buying any of the new range. (Well that and their preposterous price increases!)
