BMW 118d M Sport Coupe Vs VW Scirocco TDI GT 140 Bluemotion
Discussion
I have the 118d m sport coupe and I think it's a fantastic car!
It's a tad more powerful and economical than the scirocco and RWD is a lot more fun!
Gadgets wise, I think the BMW has more spec, ie parking sensors, sports seats with lots of adjustment, climate control.
I think the 1 series coupe also won 'which' (yes I mean which!)car of the year? Or something along those lines
Lastly, I'm aware the shape of the BMW is controversial but the scirocco is no more special than an a3/golf/ leon/ fabia (delete as appropriate)!

As said 118d.
I don't get the "can't afford the 3 series," thing. I think it drives better than the 3 series.
That TDI 140 lump on the VW will be economical but uninspiring... It's looks writes cheques that the performance can't cash. Still each to their own.
Where as the 118d is a 'proper' performance car? Its a 118 diesel! OP this is PH so you will find a lot of over rated love for BMW's. I'm surprised this thread has got this far with out 'map' being mentioned. Performance wise - neck and neck, looks & interior wise, VW hands down!

I certainly didn't say that. He asked a question, I provided an opinion. S'how it works...see?
Here we go - over-rated BMWs love, blah, blah. It's boring. People state their opinions based on their preference. Get over it.
Quite a hard call. I realise neither is a performance machine, they both look good and tick most boxes for me. The BMW has the better spec:
118d M Sport - black sapphire, oyster beige leather, bluetooth , heated seats, cruise, 18" alloys,
Scirocco - metallic grey, standard spec - cloth seats, cruise would be retrofitted.
The scirocco is a nice place to sit, the boot sill and shape is a little awkward though. The Colour combo of the 118d sounds perfect. Price wise the BMW is just a tad more expensive. Not sure what car would be the better prospect from a depreciation/ resale perspective. Both have great economy and £30 VED bracket,

I'm afraid it doesn't, the VW interiors in the current range of cars are far from nice, it's basically a mk6 Golf with no room, and rather inferior materials. I've driven both a 118d (hatch) and a Scirroco back to back and the BMW wins hands down, it's far nicer inside, has more room and Drives loads better.Neither are true performance cars but if it were my Money the scirocco doesn't even get a look in
If you can get 45mpg then I'd be amazed.. My 120d only did 42 mpg ish and most of my trip was motorway.
I did however love it to drive it was a fun car, very much so in the wet or snow. I was lucky to have the service pack which relieved the pain of BMW costs
Unfortunately after 3 years and 60,000 miles I just couldn't justify the running costs anymore. So it had to go....

I could get 48mpg from my pre LCI 520D manual without trying, and regularly saw 53+ on long trip.
Having had a VW for three years (Golf GT Sport 170tdi) and having had the 118d M-Sport for 18 months, the BM is BY FAR a better car.
Steering - better, more feel, quicker, good weight
Handling - more refined, less clunky i.e. noisy, more stability
Engine - Quieter, higher level of refinement, smoother
Interior - seats more adjustable, less rattles, fit and finish an improvement
Rear Wheel Drive - for me you could scrap all of the above benefits and give me this one alone. A total transformation in the way it puts the power down, steering feel, no torque steer or axle-tramp. Plus the sideways action in the wet should you provoke it.
Mine is a 3 door; you're looking at the coupe which has a stiffer body leading to improvements again.
Don't listen to all of this "PH loves BMW" rubbish. And certainly don't listen to the "Can't afford a 3 series" b
ks either. That is the most ill-considered statement that I've seen on here in a while!
The reason people like BMWs is a culmination of the above, plus good residuals, reliability, looks and overall performance. Funny that many of the negativity comes from those who haven't owned one.
In short, do yourself a favour and buy the BMW. And that comes from someone who has owned both.

My personal advice would be to try a car with 17" wheels and also one with 18" wheels. The ride is firm on the M Sport with runflats and I found the 18s to be particularly harsh compared to the 17s. In addition, the tyres are cheaper.
It may well be a company car (based on your choices) where somebody else is paying the tyre bills but at least drive them both. I did and ended up with 17s
Personally I think both are nice cars, I've had a Mk5 Golf GT Sport 140 and have a 120D M Sport.
