Get Your CHiPs On The A66

US cop cars now available in the UK for 23k

Used Ford Crown Victoria law enforcement vehicles are being imported from the USA by a new company that reckons it's spotted a gap in the market - presumably for mid-life crisis victims with a T.J. Hooker thing going on...

£23k (circa) will get you behind the wheel of a 2009 car that's done a maximum 65-75,000 miles in active service before being fully refurbished, has an unleaded or ethanol/bio-fuelled 4.6 litre V8, and heavy-duty suspension that's related to the Ford F150 pick-up truck set-up, apparently.

Key features to sweeten the deal include a hand-held microphone system, hand-operated spotlight, Kevlar reinforced 'stab-proof' seats, vomit resistant rear upholstery, red white and amber roof lights and 'pursuit tyres'. (We're not sure what pursuit tyres are, but we're hoping they're the kind that makes the back end hang out at ridiculous angles as per the movies.)

The importer USA Cop Cars Ltd says the cars are fully legal with VOSA testing 54 different points to make sure you don't get into trouble with our own boys in blue.

If the Crown Vics are a success, they're looking at bringing in liveried Chevy Tahoes and Dodge Chargers next.

23 Grand !

Much as I love old American cop cars thats a lot of cash for a high mileage, not really very good, not very fast, old fashioned dollop of a car, can see the appeal of a couple of grand on one for a bit of fun but 23 grand, just get a £500 Omega and get busy with the black and white paint !

Amazingly pointless...

Where do I sign?!

I had a brand new Crown Vic as a rental car a couple of months ago, it was absolutely useless, but I actually quite liked it in a low rent faux leather arm chair sort of way.

Quite a lot considering how little you can pic up a used Crown Vic 'interceptor' on US eBay.

About $5k would get you a good one with the lamp etc then lets say, £3,000 max to ship it over and get it legal (SVA Test) to drive in UK (and I reckon that's a high estimate) so we're looking at around 6 thousand British £ for the car, shipping and SVA.

Import duty is 10% of the value of the car including the cost of shipping so in this case would be £600. Then there is VAT 20% which would be £1200 so potentially, if you did it yourself you could have a Crown Vic on your drive for around £8K.

£23,000 Pah! I'll do it myself!

Whatever 'gap in the market' they spotted wouldn't be there had they been to Specsavers.

The prospect of paying 23k for a busted up American boat of questionable providence is almost totally non-existent for me!

Reading through the website it states they bring over plain white or black generic cars then sticker them up to the customer's liking, so are they actually even ex-police cars, it's a bit confusing/misleading.

just float their boat ?

What I find hilarious that you can pick these up in the States from your local city or county for around $2,000.

Someone is making a good profit out of this. hehe
