Been ringing around insurance brokers for the 996TurboS. I can get cover for £600 if I have a tracker fitted. I used to have an RAC Trackstar on a previous car but that was 10 years ago so I am out of touch. What are the best options these days please?

They won't quote. The nearest other is £800.

Is a premium of £200 not cheaper than a tracker?

It all depends on how long you intend keeping the car, which can make a lifetime tracker deal a cheaper option. If it's only 1-2 years i'm with MTR and would pay the additional premium.

Always begs the question, would you want it back, if it got stolen. For a long term prospect maybe but there's plenty of choice out there to replace a 996tt should the worst happen.

Go for a Cobra 5.............works well with Porsches .....not the cheapest but pleasant to deal with and helpful when u want it turned off for serviceing whatever ...they actually seem to listen!

Some of the firms are worse than dealing with BT in Bangalore !

Have a look at the mtrack. No fitting involved (just a box that you hide away and then put in the next car). Great firm to deal with too.

I found Tracker themselves to be excellent when I actually needed to use them to retrieve a stolen car.

Their customer service is pretty rubbish but the tracking of the cars side is separate and is extremely good. They found mine within 4 hours of reporting it stolen.

They are expensive though. There are currently two options available. They are priced at £361 and £462 plus subscriptions of either £149 or £174 per year or £399 for lifetime subscription. However if you shop around you can find it cheaper or if you call them you can haggle on the price of the unit.

There is always a debate as to whether it is worth it. The car I had stolen I had only had for 3 weeks and working out the money I would get back from the insurance company plus the loaded premiums, it would have cost me several thousand pounds. At the time I only paid £400 all in for the tracker and subscription so to me it was well worth it. You can always sell the car on once you get it back if you really didn't want it back. It will save you a lot!

Just rang these people and found them very helpful. I may need 5 units (car + agricultural plant) and what they offer with "geo fence" etc looks just the job.
I'm now waiting for insurance company to give the information on suitability and possible discounts.

edit - I found the people at Tracker rather elusive when trying to contact them by phone (in the past).

They also do a GPS equipped offering (Mtrack Pro), again no wiring which means for those needing OPC warranty coverage no failed annual inspection.

It is portable so in theory can be transferred to a replacement car should you sell your current one.

The units are Thatcham CAT 7 approved and as such will warrant the same level of discount. (The company will also send out a certificate of installation if required).

A silly question, but are there any systems that don't require signigicant splicing in to a vehicle's wiring? I could easily do this but don't like the thought.

The Mtrack unit is self powered, no wires. Battery life is 3-4 years depending on set up.

This was actually my falling out point with PGB. I needed a tracker for insurance (2004 RS) and there is no Porsche approved tracker. So either you fit a tracker for insurance and lose the warranty or keep the warranty and have more expensive insurance.

Through some internet work and recommendations, I found the mtrack. Rather bizaarly, PGB then said that even placing the mtrack in the car would invalidate the warranty. No amount of logical debate would change their stance.

So I told them to stuff their warranty and OPC servicing! Both Mtrack and my insurance co were super-helpful in the process where PGB were the complete opposite!

On another topic, I have no experience of stolen cars and trackers, but really I wouldn't want a car back after being stolen. I'd really hate the idea. So hoping to find insurance that doesn't require a tracker. After all a 2004 RS isn't desirable any more is it?

That's crazy and I would have got that in writing!!! The example above is as silly as leaving a mobile phone in the car and Porsche saying you can't have a warranty as you have a phone in the car.

That said it would be simple to temporarily remove the mtrack unit for the warranty inspection and then refit it afterwards, you certainly couldn't easily do that with a wired system.

I'm in same boat as OP and don't want the whole month subscription thing, that Mtrac looks pretty good and quoite cheap for 4 years of tracking, just need to check if insurer will accept it. It has all the right accolades so shoudln't be a problem.

Do you need the fob? extra £50.

Yes and no .... it depends on what extra peace of mind you want. The standard unit relies on a 'geo-fence' ie if the car moves out of the GSM Zone it will alarm, however as the unit only wakes up every 3-4 hours that could be too late for some applications. That said the movement sensor could be armed remotely but the arm would also be dependent on the 'wake' cycle.

The remote arms the inbuilt movement sensor instantly so any subsequent movement will 'alarm' the unit. The movement sensitivity can be set by the mtrack guys anywhere for 0-24 seconds I believe.

I'd go with Mike's (of S&C) solution of not getting your P&J stolen in the first place...

So I'd need the fob if using on a car?

I am interested in this, but it looks like they are just a UK company, I need a service in Australia.
