Morning all,

My other half's Aquaracer has conked out, so I sent it off to Tag up at Manchester to get the battery and seal done - cost £56. Not too bad, and on a par with my Breitling, who have always been excellent.

However, letter today stating that a 'full service' is required, total now £180! yikes

Cue twitch to right eye irked and reaching for 'phone. Feeling quite miffed as I bought the watch as a gift for Xmas 09.

Telephone chat along the lines of:

"Why's it 3 times the price?"
Tag Lady: "Blah blah... excessive consumption... cannot guarantee battery... oils jam mechanism..."

Me now gearing up for a "it's only 18 months old, that's pretty poor quality" debate

Tag Lady: "Oh, I see - well there is a 2 year guarantee, so if you have the warranty card we can sort it under the guarantee. You can post it or send me a pic or scan of it"

Me: Secretly delighted I keep boxes and paperwork and have an iphone. bounce

10 minutes later email arrives promising work under guarantee, back in a couple of weeks.

The Lesson? Always keep the little boxes and cards, and make sure the dealer fills it in/stamps it correctly!

They were trying it on.
If they'd realised it was under warranty, they wouldn't have said anything.

My aquaracer did the same thing at 18 months and I had the same problem as you. I too had the warranty card but had to send it off.

When the battery goes again I'd recommend taking it to your local watch shop and having them swap it out - saves time and money.

Next time, as the warranty has expired, I'll be doing it myself - servicing equipment is cheap enough online!

I'll still be sending my Breitling in though paperbag

I'm just going through exactly the same with my Aquaracer. £58 for a battery, 4 weeks wait. 2 weeks later, phone call, it needs a service Sir, changing the battery hasn't got it working again, needs this, needs that, that'll be £175 please.

All this "it needs a service" is a complete load. I've got £50 watches in the collection that have been tooteling along for years without a service.

Con merchants.

What is there to service on a battery operated watch anyway? I wrongly it would appear assumed it would be electronics inside not a mechanical movement?

It's bks, isn't it. Batteries are about £3 in Maplin. A case removal tool is about £10. Useful if you have more than one quartz watch. If you need it pressure testing, most independents will do it for about £20 and I think 50m water resistance is what they'll be able to "set" it to.

Another reason why I have thus far, avoided Tag GB HQ like the plague.

Surprisingly, Timpsons seems to be ideal for a new battery and waterproof reseal. I think I usually pay thirty-ish quid for a battery, waterproof reseal and pressure test and the work comes with a year's guarantee.

Posh, Swiss watches are well catered for. Who'd have thought it from Timpsons?

The only value I can see to servicing a quartz watch by a manufacturer like TAG is that the watch will be cleaned ultrasonically. Am I wrong? Is there more to servicing a quartz watch?
