997 gen1 C2S c. -20mm LSD and X51 - where's PASM? PSE?
Discussion
Hello all,
I am looking at a car c. the following pertinent spec included:
-20mm and LSD
x51 pack
PCCB
Sports Chrono Plus
My questions are:
1) What's the chat re PASM on the LSD cars? One dealer said it was included and another not... I am confused. Any help?
2) X51 power kit c. Sports Chrono Plus. What does that mean for PSE and anything else.
3) Ride quality is my major concern... any experience of -20mm option owners out there?
I've got such conflicting info from dealers and others - and I suppose an online forum might lend itself either way but you guys seem very knowledgable!
Cheers for any info,
sb

Easiest option is to view the car because X51 powerpack cars are a rarity and well worth it. 0-100mph in like 9s. I am looking at a car c. the following pertinent spec included:

1. Button on console, press it and see if speedo comes up with PASM normal or PASM sport, if so you've got PASM.
2. X51 powerkit cars have PSE as standard I believe, a picture of the rear of the car will reveal this due to out pipes been larger.
3. Nope, but I'd be more worried about ripping front splitter off over speed bumps, but I am sure if you were buying the car the OPC would agree to fit normal springs in the price or for a small premium.
If this is a true X51 car with PSE, the suspension issues can be changed quite easily, the X51 would make it a buy for me if its a good car. The power difference is very noticable, 381BHP against stock 355BHP. Resulting in GT3 performance in the first 3 gears due to shorter ratios.

All the blurb says that -20mm + LSD (Sports Chassis) does NOT come with PASM. It's either or, never both. As I understand it, the Sports Chassis is a sort-of half-way house between PASM 'Normal' and 'Sport' mode. So, firm, but not overly so.
X51 includes the Sports Exhaust (PSE) and the sum of X51, Sports Chassis and PCCB gives, as Gibbo says, near-GT3 levels of performance.
All-in-all, a good package if you can get it - X51 is over £7k on a new 997! ('S' only)

With the factory sports option, you don't get the adjustable shock absorbers.
From the brochure...
"Sports suspension. Featuring a lowered ride height and stiffened setup, the sports suspension package is available
as an extra-cost option on the 911 Carrera and Carrera 4 Coupé models. It is also offered as a nocost option for
the 911 Carrera S and 4S Coupé. Designed for total sports performance, it is a valuable addition for racing or
trackday use. The package comprises firmer and lower springs (20 mm lower than the standard 911 Carrera, 10 mm lower
than the PASM-equipped 911 Carrera S), new anti-roll bars with greater torsional strength, and firmer damper settings.
It also includes a mechanically locking rear differential offering increased traction on poor road surfaces or under
rapid acceleration, e.g., when exiting a low-speed bend. Please note that this option cannot be combined with
Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) and is only available in conjunction with a six-speed manual gearbox
and 19-inch wheels."

Bloody hell, that actually sounds superb. PASM is great in normal, but in Sport on the road its not that great, just seems under damped and over-springed, but it is good on very smooth roads. From the brochure...

The downfall for me would be the 20mm lowered ride height, 10mm lower than PASM, with an Aerokit thats gonna give issues, without an aerokit should be fine.
All in all the power pack, sports suspensions, cerammics should result in a car weighing less than a GT3, with shorter gearing and only 35BHP of the power of a gen1 997 GT3.
I'd be buying that car, then getting Aerokit added in the future and should buy a few spare front splitters.

Yes the Powerkit is 7k PLUS FITTING!!X51 includes the Sports Exhaust (PSE) and the sum of X51, Sports Chassis and PCCB gives, as Gibbo says, near-GT3 levels of performance.

I've got the following from the kit:-
X51 headers - £700
X51 radiators - £100
X51 undertray - £50
PSE
I could also get the X51 airbox but with the mods required to fit it that would be looking at £3000, so I've stuck with stock airbox setup.
The X51 powerkit also has more work done to the engines intake, cylinder heads plus a remap.
Ceramics are approx 12-15k to retro-fit and the advantages over steels for the road are well worth it, especially when buying used so its not you paying the premium, remember well looked ceramics will save you lots of money, the disc last nearly 100k miles and the pads 30-40k miles and if you ever need to change back to steels your look at approx £2000.
What you waiting for, make a purchase because I can assure you it won't be around for long as X51 cars with ceramics are very desirable.
My car had ceramics, aerokit and was like brand new, for me it was an instant purchase and I've added the PSE and X51 goodies and now I love the car, its blazingly quick and handles like a dream.

Thanks all - as ever very helpful.
1) That makes sense re the either/or for PASM - thanks. And mid way between PASM min/max would be good as the lower ride and stiffer bars will work with that.
2) Right so PSE is standard - good.
3) Ride - well I'll see on test drive tomorrow :-)
And yeah, there's no Aero kit on the car at the moment so that makes it less prone to scuffing the front... and performance similar to a gt3 is pretty special territory - wow! I was also reading about the PCCB brakes being really rather special in many ways but the weight, or lack thereof, is quite substantial. I do a lot of cycling where 50g is not inconsequential, furthermore rotating mass is the killer so light wheels are key - well when accelerating - so I am really keen to see how the package works.
Any thanks Gibbo205 - I agree :-) I'm not hanging around intentionally, just making sure I understand everything! It is after all quite a large amount of money (well for me).

Sports suspension on the 7.1 S substituted passive dampers for the std PASM. It'll be somewhere between PASM soft and PASM Sports (which most find much too hard for normal road use).
Sports + X51 + PCCB is a very rare spec and will have had a good price tag new. Check what kind of use it's had though (Road/Track) - replacement PCCBs aren't cheap and wear out on track.

I've had my C4S for 4 months now, and it has the X-51 pack and the sports chassis.
Unfortuantely I haven't driven another 997, so I don't have anything to compare it to, but when I saw my car had the X-51 pack I had to have it! The airbox is a thing of beauty!
The only thing I will say is that the car does ride very firmly with the sports chassis. If any sort of ride comfort is a consideration it may not be for you. Coming from a CSL it wasn't too much of a shock!
P.S. You must unplug the PSE (on X-51 cars the plug is on the left hand side of the engine bay) it transforms the car completely. Used to really cheese me off when the valves closed whilst accelerating!!

You unplug it on all PSE cars, not just PSE and yes the noise is glorious. Unfortuantely I haven't driven another 997, so I don't have anything to compare it to, but when I saw my car had the X-51 pack I had to have it! The airbox is a thing of beauty!
