I often here about cars being limited by the factoy to 155mph. Especially mercs, etc.

Is this also the case for porsche? Or are they unlimited as from factory? If so, why do certain cars require limiting and others not?

And no...I haven't had the courage to find out for myself!!

Porsche do not fit limiters to their cars.

A few German companies inlcuding Mercedes and BMW fit 250kmh/155mph limiters to most of their cars as part of a voluntary thing to appease the greens and the anti speed "safety" lobbyists. I know most BMW M cars that we've seen at VMAX, although officially having a 155mph limiter fitted, actually hit a limiter at about 164mph GPS verified, normally showing about 169/170 on the speedo.

My understanding is that many of the German car manufacturers had a "gentlemen's agreement" to limit thier cars to 155mph.

Porsche isn't part of that agreement, so their cars are not limited - 911 Carreras top out at around 175mph. The Turbo reaches around 194mph.

No limiters on Porsches. The reason for 155mph limiters that I remember reading when they first came in, is that this is 250km/h and above this speed the incidence of pollution (noise as well as amount of fuel burnt etc) is significantly increased, the green party were quite strong in Germany and this pacified them somewhat.

That explains what happened when I was driving an Audi S8 (which I thought was 155-limited) recently, it seemed to top out at an indicated 170.

On some AMG models it is an option to derestrict to 186mph, hopefully their cars are more stable now;)
There's only around 10mph-ish difference between the carrera s and turbo top speed.

Thanks for posting this question, I too had wondered why some cars were limited and others not. Its not limited to European cars as Subaru cars are also limited.

I wonder what affect it would have on sales if Porsche were to limit their cars, I guess the answer is that they wouldn't as long as marques like lambo, Ferrari etc didn't.

I suppose that having a 200MPH car doesn't mean you have to take it to the limit but there is a comfort knowing that it's there just the same.

Limited equals vehicle castration IMO.

Yep...I have heard that on mercs for example that you can get the limit removed (although not sure merc would do it for you). Maybe a back-ally garage job.

Seems pointless having a 200mph car limited to 155! Not that you would necessarily do that speed...but still...!

Merc does it, it's an official option

Hmmm how odd. My GT2 seems to be limited to just under 200mph. I might ask them about it next time it's in.

BMW will remove the limit on M cars if you have a racing licence IIRC

My old 1996 Mercedes S Class wasn't limited and would run to about 210mph. 0-125 in mid 11's
