Front wishbones and bushes just replaced on my E46 320i...

...the steering wheel had been vibrating between 50 and 60 mph and on braking. 95k miles on the clock at the mo, so the wear and tear to be expected I suppose. The car now handles beautifully!
It cost £540 incl VAT all in (at a BMW independent), so not too bad a price.

Wow, wow, wow.
FYI, next time it happens (in about 45k miles), the front wishbone rear bushes are £80 delivered from C3BMW and take about 45 minutes to fit for both sides.
Also, unless the actual wishbones were physically bent, there would have been nno reason for your indie to have replaced them. All the bushes can be purchased seperately.

The wishbones do not bend but the ball joint is an integral part of the wishbone, therefore the whole arm must be replaced if there is wear in the joint.
Yes, that's right - on the E46 the whole wishbone needs to be replaced. There was definitely a lot of 'play' in the joint and the steering wheel wobbles and vibration have now gone - so the diagnosis was correct. With regards to cost, it's always possible to buy cheap (eg. Eurocarparts) parts, but that would have been a false economy IMHO.
