Vauxhall Astra Bertone, help please.
Discussion
OH is out in the car at the moment but it won't start, she says the lights are working and radio but are "flickering" and the alarm is going off intermittantly (sp?).
I'm thinking she's immobilised the car somehow?, if so how do you getted it going again?.

It's a transponder, so just getting the key near the ignition barrel is all you can do. Usually the ECU light flashes quickly if there's a immob. fault.
Could try locking/ unlocking with the remote or the key. Next maybe battery off to reset.
Not a fault I've heard of yet. Radio flickering sounds like the battery might be dying, or maybe a wire has broken? Wierd. Thinking more, there's a ground post behind each kick panel, driver's and passenger's. I've heard of wierd stuff happening if these work loose.

That's what I thought but my dads there and he's tried jump starting it and it won't budge.
Thanks AstraDan I'll ring them now and pass on info.
A mate had the same with a Vectra, fitted a new battery and it was fine. Thanks AstraDan I'll ring them now and pass on info.
Thinking about it I should have realised the signs as over the last couple of months the alarm has been going off randomly which apparently is a sign that the battery is dying (or so I read!).

Yep that seems to have been the problem, my father managed to get it going after about 30 minutes.

I thought that was meant to be a sign that the battery in the power sounder was on it's way out.Thinking about it I should have realised the signs as over the last couple of months the alarm has been going off randomly which apparently is a sign that the battery is dying (or so I read!).
I used to have a coupe and it did the same things when the battery was low - lights and radio ok, but the alarm would go off when I tried to start it and everything would dim.
I managed to do it twice, first time was on a Christmas Eve, I couldn't drink at the time due to medication so took the car to the pub and foolishly left the lights on after bringing it round the front of the pub and going off to see who she'd found to chops too. My mates tried to "help" by pushing it using the spoiler as a handle despite me shouting at them not to and inevitably ripped it off, I wasn't a happy bunny!
Got some jump leads on it in the end and it went straight away, but the battery wouldn't hold a charge like it used to after that, I had the option to work from home with my job at the time and if I didn't go in for most of the week then it was very slow turning over and would only just catch and start.
I kept forgetting to do something about it and eventually finished it off when I stuck the radio on one day whilst waxing it and remembered all about the battery when the alarm went off and the lights dimmed when I went to move it back around the front of the house. That time however the cells had gone and it wouldn't hold a charge.

Spot on what was happening according to OH, think i'll pick up a new battery on the weekend better safe than sorry.I used to have a coupe and it did the same things when the battery was low - lights and radio ok, but the alarm would go off when I tried to start it and everything would dim.

Aye, I bought my replacement one from a Vauxhall Dealer in the end as it wasn't as dear as I was expecting, £40 or £45 for a 60AH one springs to mind, was cheaper than Halfords or Spareworld at the time anyway.BigS said:
