New 4.0 V8 for Audi S6, S8 and S7 Sportback

Latest S quattro models swap two cylinders for a brace of turbos

New engine goes in...
New engine goes in...
Audi's 5.2 litre V10 FSI engine has been dropped for a new bi-turbo V8 in the firm's top end S quattro models - a line-up that's about to be boosted by a new S7 Sportback.

The new engine and new S7 variant are part of Audi's imminent Frankfurt show story, and all the new models will be available to order here in the UK in the final quarter of next year. Which is a bit of a wait, but 'good things' and all that...

The new V8 offers 420hp in the S6 and S7, and a meatier 520hp in the S8 - with the two versions offering 405 and 479lb ft respectively. That's enough for 0-62mph times of 4.8secs for the S6, 4.9secs for the S6 Avant and S7, and 4.2secs for the S8. All are limited to 155mph.

...latest S6...
...latest S6...
The new engine features a cylinder deactivation system that disengages four of the eight cylinders under part load to maximise fuel efficiency, and start-stop and energy recuperation systems also feature as standard. As a result, the cars can all achieve between 27.7 and 29.1mpg on the Euro cycle which is an improvement of up to 25 percent against the V10.

In order to reduce any distress owners might feel from hearing their engines straining earnestly in four cylinder mode, Audi has specified an Active Noise Cancellation system. This features four microphones in the headlining and a computer that broadcasts 'antiphase' sounds to cancel any of the less salubrious engine/exhaust notes.

...and the new S7.
...and the new S7.

So what are the chances that this will go into the new RS4?

Also, I don't suppose the noise cancellation thing will work from the outside.

The S7 looks spot on on for a large hatchback/coupe.

I wonder how much fuel is *actually* saved turning the extra cylinders off...

Would be cool to have some people on normal driving cycles try with/without to see, rather than us just trust their euro cycle cough bullst cough tests...

Saw the pic of that new engine and for some reason I immediately thought TMNT (ninja turtles for the less familiar with the acronym...)

If I'm buying a bloody V8 I want it to be a V8 all the time!

No more Lambo derived V10, which will probably do resale values of older cars no harm at all.

I guess they have to keep a set of valves open so they arent re-compressing and re-expanding the same gas (or maybe they do, using the energy put into the gas from compression to bounce the piston back under expansion)... but whatever, they still have to send 4 dead weights, that now arent producing power, up n down so theres surely some frictional/mechanical losses to be incurred. Obviously its not additional loss, its always there, but you cant turn the losses off like you can the power. I would assume that the economy gains are noticable else it would be a waste of money to try employ.

There's a bright white one around here, parked with the rear facing towards the road. The rear is truly an awful thing to behold.

I know it's an exceptionally large car anyway but it certainly looks much too big as well (though the colour could be part of it).

Not a nice car, and utterly pointless too.

Audi had no business putting the V10 into their cars in the first place. I found it all very distressing.

Probably the colour. There is a silver one I see quite often, a handsome looking car IMO.

Another 400-500 bhp super saloon from Audi/Merc/BMW......am I the only one getting a bit bored with these mega saloons with virtually identical power and performance figures?

Can the 360º parking camera be used to publish street view data to Google? could make some money on the side ;-)

Quite like the arse of the '7, but why does the S7 badge appear grey in that photo? It should be red, so that's either some stupidity from Audi or some very very odd photo editing? confused

Shouldn't be too tricky to disable the four-cylinder mode, anyway smile

So Audi are using technology that Chrysler were using nearly ten years ago, impressive.

4.2 sec for the S8, that sounds truelly epic. Current S8 still in my top 5 cars and will probably be there forever.

same engine yet 420hp in s6 and 520hp in s8, must be quite easy to squeeze out the extra 100bhp then if owners were that way inclined ??

The whole cylinder deactivation thing is nothing new, not sure why the germans have only just cottoned onto it. A Chevvy in Canada two years ago i drove that was a v6 did the deactivation lark and we got some 35 mph out of a 3.5 litre engine. Quite impressive really.
