Pic Of The Week: When Mitsubishi Did Rallying
Tommi Makinen plus Evo VI plus Portuguese roads equals high drama
It's been so long since Mitsubishi has actually been successful at rallying that it's almost easy to forget that for years it dominated the WRC.
But the chirpy 1981 Lancer 2000 Turbo that we showed you yesterday (Thursday) - the first ever car to feature essentially the same mill that would go onto power Mitsubishi's rallying successes - had us thinking back to the Lancer's glory days.
Hence this airborne POTW. It's Mr Tommi Makinen at the 1999 Rally of Portugal, winging his way to fifth place in the rally, part of a season-long campaign that netted him his fourth world title in as many years.

At his peak years 1996-99 Tommi was untouchable... even luck was on his side when Carlos's Corolla broke down 300 yards before the end of Margam park (final SS of the GB rally) to hand over the 1999 championship to Tommi.
The phone call came in when he was already in Finland and even himself could not believe it... haha!
Take nothing away from a legendary rally driver and World champ (x4)!

[pedant]That's a VI surely?[/pedant]
Brings back great memories. Was a huge McRae fan but Tommi was brilliant as well and always prefered the EVO over the Impreza.
Peak times in motorsport for me, growing up as a kid in the 90's with F1, WRC, BTCC, BPR GT, FIA GT, CART, WSBK and MotoGP, mostly with cigarette sponsorship for great liveries, all having huge manufacturer support and there being tonnes of great drivers/riders. The homologation specials produced from that lot were so good as well.

Didn't carlos throw a paddy and ended up smashing his rear window with his helmet? The phone call came in when he was already in Finland and even himself could not believe it... haha!

I know this one, that was his co-driver Luis Moya.

I was privilaged to meet them both in Cheltenham that year, as well as Colin and Richard (RIP both), Marcus, Alistair, Freddy Loix, Juha Kankunnen, Toni Gardemaister, Nicky Grist among others.
Signed postcards, posters, photos etc.

Looking forward to this years finale in Wales. First time in long time the title might go down the line (same as 2009). I rest my hopes with Mikko to end Seb's domination. Yes, Loeb is a good driver and blah, blah, blah but it has become a bit monotonous....
