Does anyone actually know how Gypsies tax/insure/register their cars?

I have seen them driving around in cars too expensive to lose or have crushed and they have current tax on them. I dare say some could be copies etc but with so many ANPR equipped cars about now I can't see that working too well. To get the tax they presumably need to be insured and registered to someone somewhere?

So where are they registered to, are they insured and if not and they get pulled, what then?

Anyone know?

They may be hire cars, they may be registered to plots that they own which is fully legal. Chances are they are insured and have licences as well. They know the score if they get stopped that the police won't let them off because they are travellers. The police are more likely to pounce if anything to get the vehicles off them.

Just like most criminals and drug dealers have fully legit cars because they know that is the easiest way to get stopped and found out if they don't.

The misses used to work for Toyota Finance, you are not allowed to refuse them finance because they can't read or write, so they used to fill in the forms with X's and the finance was approved. absolute madness. this was about 5 years ago, so no idea if this still goes on.

But surely to lease or hire a car you must have to able to prove who you are, as in address, credit history etc etc?

I did some building work for a chap whose main source of income was from providing insurance cover for travellers, he reckoned they paid a pretty high premium (big mark up for him) as a lot of the popular places wouldn't touch them. He was certainly doing alright for himself. As far as address goes I'm sure that most travellers sites have a proper address & post code so the vehicle can be registered & taxed from that.

Most of those I've stopped (which is admittedly no a huge number) have been registered to a permanent site somewhere. I've not yet had a no licence or no insurance job with travellers.

I used to work with a bloke who lived on a canal barge ( similar lifestyle-he moved on every so often to avoid canal charges) .Address problems - simple ,he had his mail sent to a mate who provided a mailbox service .He merely turned up every so often and collected .
NOW -I live in the midlands ,a not too high insurance area .But I've got relations up north - I could of course do what they do and use an accomodation adress in a very cheap insurance address and live down here . Similar idea.

Most I've stopped are registered to a permanent site. Although I've still had a few travellers cars off them for no insurance/no licence (despite the not uncommon practice of either trade insurance or false details.)

Due to a need for a fixed address the system conspires to ensure theyre unlicensed, untaxed, uninsured and unregistered.
Unless they give a random fixed address to satisfy the system.

Can't say about all of them but to say their vehicles are mostly untaxed is untrue, I have seen lots of their vehicles with current tax on them, hence my original question.

If as you say they are regularily driving around "unlicensed, untaxed, uninsured and unregistered" then what are the BIB doing about it, I know what would happen if I tried it.

I think people want their cars to be illegal so they can complain and winge.

The truth is you're less likely to find an untaxed and unisured car within the travelling community than outside in the general populace. They're a lot if things but stupid isn't one.
