So had the car 4 days and really enjoying it. My daily drive before the saxo was a P reg 1.1 106, the diffrence is night and day but the power steering took a bit of getting used to and the brakes are mega. A few little bit and bobs the gearing seems rather long, and I would like the engine to rev a little higher

Little Jobs:

DONE Remove a bit of vinyl the previous owner has put on the door frame.
Clean and paint the wheel nuts silver
Refit the rear badges
little engine oil leak, Remove rocker cover and replace gasket
Sort rust patch out.

Nasty!

A bit of brake cleaner and polish later.


Modifications

Engine: Im still reading up on this so my facts might be a bit wrong, any advice would be appreciated.

I have done quite a bit of work on the top end of TU engines replacing a couple of bent valves on my 106 when I selected 2nd instead of 4th when I was 17 boxedin and changing the head gasket on mine and a few mates 106/saxos.

My plan is to find a 106 rallye head/xsi, inlet manifold, ecu(unlocked), loom etc and associated parts. Should be a stright swap apart from a bit of loom splicing. The reason behind this is that the 106 rallye had a wilder J cam. The rallye ecu will let it rev to 7400rpm and the head is a little better.

Gear Box:

I want to to get a s1 rallye and put a VTR 5th gear in. This is a rather easy mod as 5th gear sits in the gearbox sump

What's your insurance like? The VTS is everything the VTR is, but with a proper engine. The VTR is still a good old bus though. They're cheap to run, easy to fix and contrary to what the majority of PHers would say (because they're French no doubt), they're pretty reliable.

Just watch the rear beams, gearboxes and rot around the floorpan on the jacking pads. They like to rust, these cars.
Im 19 with 1 years ncb and the insutance is £900 a VTS was a lot more and I can't justify giving that amount of money to them theifs. Yeh when I went to look at it, I went through it with a fine tooth comb. Really chuffed.

Your insurance is £900?! :O

I called Admiral about a Saxo VTR and they wanted over double. Could be the 0 NCB though frown

That insurance is very reasonable, I paid around 1400-1500 for my VTS at 18. Shafted!

You know they are supposed to have that vinyl on the doors? lol

I mis mine, had 2 now. A VTR and a VTS, both in Maritius blue. Cracking little cars, and so stable on the limit.

I really want one as a first car, totally standard. It is a shame the chavs have ruined the rep of these cars as from what i have read they are great fun to own and drive.

Love mine its my first car. Super quick off the mark and handles great. Have fun smile. Looking to sell mine for a r5 gtt though always wanted one.

Get the brakes hot! They'll soon feel anything other than "mega"! Luckily upgrades are cheap and very easy (though if you go the Xsara VTS/306 GTi-6 route you'll need 15in wheels. The standard 14's won't clear the calipers).
The gearing is long for economy (they can average 40mpg without too much trouble) and the engine is in a fairly feeble state of tune, mainly to prolong engine life. The VTS was the all screaming tempremental one, though they're fairly solid engines too.

Ignore the 106 XSi engine gear - the head/inlet are the same as the VTR. The ph2 106 Rallye head uses bigger valves than the VTR though, except the last of the line 98bhp versions which were the same, however these heads had roller-rockers though, so an early 106 Rallye ph2 head would be best as far as mating it with your engine goes. You don't need the inlet though - it's the same. The only inlet worth bothering with is the ph1 106 Rallye as it's a swept cast alloy type affair. Better airflow, great induction noise but you'll have issues mating it to your loom/ECU as it uses earlier management (more akin to an AX GTi). Can be done though, with enough work.

If you need to keep the VTR engine, a ph2 106 Rallye head would be a good purchase and if you can find it, the ECU too. I'd go for an aftermarket cam though, something slightly more aggressive again though the ph2 Rallye one would suffice. Then a 4-2-1 manifold (Raceland are cheap and pretty fair in comparison with the bigger boys), decat and SaxSport exhaust.
Gearbox-wise, I wouldn't mess around with the 5th gear mod. I'd get a 106 1.4 XSi/AX GTi box, or VTS box. The difference in noise created by the revs @ 70mph of the boxes isn't massive, though a ph1 106 Rallye on the motorway isn't ideal (around 4k revs @ 70mph IIRC)! Also worth bearing in mind the ECU goes wideband after 3.5k revs, so that's the magic number to keep it under for good economy. This could be the difference between 72mph and 77mph - do you really want to bust the seal open on that gearbox for those few leptons?

It still won't be any quicker than a VTS (though it might get close) but it'll make it a damn site more fun!
