996 C4S space saver off-rim - could happen to you...
Discussion
Thought to share this.
New tyres Conti SC2, month old. Driving along country lane, close to home and go over a rut in the road; a road well travelled I hasten to add.
Feel change in handling, and NS rear is very flat, very quickly but low speed so no dramatics and stop ok.
Confidentally jack car, remove wheel and find sidewall has split, tyre pressures were right - so what's happened here? This was not a big rut, just where the road had eroded.
Secondly, and the irritating bit. I put the space saver on, started the little electric pump, the expected pops, whines and hisses occur...hmm...the hisses?
The space saver had popped off the rim, and I was unable to deflate the space saver to reset it - takes several hours apparently. So...packed up all the gear, and had to walk the two miles home, pick up a spare wheel from the Pirelli set at the house (how lucky was that?) change the wheel and do a fairly complicated shuttling of vehicles back home - that I'll not bore you with!
Lesson for me was, check the space saver is set properly on its rim before inflating it. You might do the same if you are caught in the same situation.
These things come in 3's...the week following, my wife had two flats in her A3 on the M4 (thanks RAC), and a tyre on the Freelander took a screw and went flat this weekend. So, all told a very expensive couple of weeks.
