OK - I have what I believe to be a PCM1 unit fitted into an '02 996. I recently discovered, after loads of searching that I infact didn't have a missing sim card try but instead just needed a SIM adapter for credit card sized entry so I am now able to use the phone. So, having asked the Porsche dealer and the place I bought it from for info and they all got it wrong I thought I would ask the people on this forum as they actually seem to know.

1. Is there any way to add bluetooth to the unit (i.e. not an external parrot kit for example)
2. How do I know what software version I have and how do I update it
3. Is there a list anywhere of what the updates provide
4. Can postcode searching be added
5. Is there a simple way to mute the call from my end when using the PCM phone
6. Someone on one of the forums mentioned a"becker" unit - what is this and what benefits does it give, and where can I see one on line and get a price

Any answers of help on any of the above would be much appreciated.

1. No. I have got a Giff Gaff card in mine (if you just get a new sim card it will come in an adaptor card - just leave it in and slide the whole card into the reader) and just forward my other phone to it when in the car. Works pretty well.
2. There is a setting somewhere in the PCM menu to tell you this. Can't remember at this moment in time though. Not too hard to find. I found a guy on a different forum who sold me the disks cheaper. I don't think he is there anymore though I am afraid. A Google should find a cheap site who will do you some disks.
3. The updates are simply a slightly more stable unit and the latest map. Nothing radical.
4. No.
5. Not as far as I know I'm afraid. I can't find one.
6. The becker unit is a single din unit and is really meant for older 911s I think. I wouldn't recommend either sticking with the PCM1 (it really is quite a good unit, the only downside is the lack of postcode search), or switching to a double-din unit. The Pioneer ones get a good review.

To find your version press MAIN and TRIP at the same time. All the details come up.

The phone is a real hassle, you will break the door taking the sim in and out regularly, or break the sim. Buy a second phone, as you cannot get a second sim and do as MTH says.

There is a mobridge or denison gateway, see the post on page 2 here system costing a lot , google it.

SAT NAV not really much use now as even the updated dscs are out of date.

Wow that was quick - thanks for the reply - what's a giff gaff by the way.

On the SIM card front I found a holder on the net. I tried using one of the old bits that a new sim card com in but it kept falling out. he new one works a treat but it is a paiin taking it in and out of the phone. I contacted both O2 and Vdafone and neither would let me have a duplicate.

Majordad - this is a PCM 1 (not sure if there is more than one type) but this doesn't have a SIM door or tay - it just has a slot that takes the full credit card sized SIM card.

On the whole it's a bit rubbish the PCM1. No postcodes, no bluetooth, and no way of muting from your end. A product of its generation I suppose.

Giff Gaff is a provider - http://giffgaff.com/ PAYG. Free sim card and you then have to load it with £10 or so of credit.

You certainly can get updates. Mine is 2010 maps bought last March. I have even seen 2011 maps around somewhere. I will try to find you some.
