I apologise if this has been asked before but I can't find anything with search

I'm struggling to find a place to hire a rig with a long boom like these:

I've considered making one, but it's not something I would use very often so hiring could be a better option.

The only place I can find on google is:
http://www.arrimedia.com/catalog/productlist.php?c...
but they have no pictures and seem quite expensive

Thanks

Type the word 'Rig' in to the search function and loads come up.

Sixth one down has a few recommendations in it although if you are only using it once may be better off hiring.

You can hire mine if you like...although you may be a bit far from me (High Wycombe). PM me if interested

Cool thanks, I was searching too specifically. The more I look the more I want to DIY it!

Thanks for the offer mike, but as you suspect it would be a bit far.

Hi, can I ask what sort of pole set up you have and how did you go about acquiring it/joining pieces together? I am looking at a DIY set up myself at the moment and a bit stuck on this.

It's a similar set-up to the middle pic above. 2x suction pads which have scaffolding clamps attached to them. Then ive got 2x 2m long aluminium poles which attached to each other using some more scaffolding clamps, and attached to the suction pads through the aforementioned clamps. I then have a magic clamp to fix the camera to the end of the pole. If you're going to DIY it make sure the poles are sturdy enough and wont bend much. Mine are 50mm in diameter.

Forgive me, but..

  • Is it really wise to hang £500+/£1000+ worth of photography equipment on the end a home made pole?
  • Couldn't you just get someone else to take a picture and use a slow shutter speed to get the same effect?

Well you could do a panned shot do get a sharp car with blurred everything else if you are at a distance. But to get the close-up angles that you do with a rig then that is not really possible unless the camera is somehow fixed to the car.

thanks i've got some metal poles (3 section) which slot in to each - its the crossbar from a background support kit. Diameter is about half that but it seems strong enough to hold the weight. The problem is where the sections are connected theres a bit of give which will cause bounce (I haven't really tested this properly).

So I'm considering trying out a heavier but stronger aluminium set up (relatively cheap) or go for a CF tube setup but its not easy getting quotes!

I have everything else (suction pads, clamps, magic arm etc).

See if you have a local sailing / windsurfing club nearby, the flashy stuff there uses cf spars, and as it gets windy in the winter they break a few.... Usually spare parts in the boatyard for free!!

if it's half the diameter of mine they will either be too flexible or too heavy. you need aluminium or CF really. the wider the diameter the better as it means less bend. They must be hollow of course!

From what I have seen, you would have someone right next to the camera as well should the worst happen.

I'm considering the wide sections of a CF fishing pole but I've yet to see first hand how stiff they are
