The electric wing mirrors on my 84 280i need to be replaced, as they can no longer be tightened. Can someone remind me what brand/model car these were originally used on? Or, is there a source for replacement units?

Thanks, Jerry

They seem to have been used on various cars, come people say they were SD1, some Granada, some SAAB. Certainly the wiring colour-codes are the same as the SAAB 9000, the switches are from a Granada and the units themselves were made somewhere like Denmark, so all three are possible wink

My 84 Wedge has the older style mirrors, mounted to the door shell, not the aero ones mounted up next to the window glass. The Saab units you referenced appear similar to the aero TVR units.

This is an 86 model, does it have the type you are after?

Ah, if you mean the pods themselves they were TVR-specific. I assumed the OP meant just the motor units.

If you can wait until the Feb / March then mine are up for sale. The motor still works on the drivers side and there is some whirring noises on the passenger side that sound encouraging.

Here is a picture of my 84 Tasmin showing the wing mirrors I would like to replace with like units. It would have been easier if I had started the thread with this photo!

Those '86 mouldings (post 4 above) do fit the earlier wedges, 'cos I got some for my wedge, from DG a while ago. I painted them matt black, and they look pretty good.

I would really like to know where the motor mechanism comes from though - I haven't found anything that fits neatly so far (have a 'manual' mirror on a bracket at the moment)

I replaced both motors on my pod mounted mirrors with a new and a used 1984 BMW Series 3 motors. The BMW mirrors were in flipper mounts like above. Oddly while the wiring seemed the same, I had to rotate the aiming switch 90 degrees (so up and down became right and left) but otherwise no big issues. The info is at the end of this long thread: 280i - More Mirrors, Got 'em apart, now what?

The new motor came from here http://www.rmeuropean.com/search.aspx?keyword=51-16-1-394-107 and was about the same price as the used one with the mirror and flipper assembly. BTW, the mirrors are a cut a bit differently so they doesn't fit in the pods (might fit the flipper). Grady.

I have the same mirrors on my 1984 350, with the same problem, they have become loose and won't tighten, so swing back when driven at speed. Let me know if you can source any.
Richard Thorpe at RT Racing might be able to help, I usually start with him.
