An advert for TDI-Tuning diesel boxes caught my eye earlier and I had a shufty round the site. Look easy to install and benefits seem OK.

Anyone have one installed (not necessarily from these guys)?

Are they any good? Do they do any long/short term damage? Anything to consider - driving style, type, distance etc.

Thanks,
Scott

I'd say get a proper Re-Map from a reputable company instead of a tuning box.

Can you elaborate, please?

I know nothing about this.

What's the difference between the two (apart from the addition of the box)?

Thanks,
Scott

Tuning boxes were used on the old diesels e.g. The vauxhall/Isuzu dti engines.

Remaps are now used on the newer diesels as they run ecu's.

The tuning box tends to do an overly simplistic job of changing fuelling.

A proper remap will amend all the parameters contained within the ECU. In general, tuning boxes don't do too good a job.

The one I tried required me to replace the flywheel after the first outing, and the injectors after the second

Others have used the same one with no problems and report 800mpg and 1000 extra torques, but I'd be a bit wary of them personally

Cool,

Thanks guys.

Are re-maps expensive? i have a 1.5 dci Scenic (53 plate) getmecoat if it helps to provide a ball-park figure?

I take it it's not something you have done down your local garage?

I had one on a 3L diesel x5 and it was very good.

Ok not as good as a full remap, but it was about £300 instead of £1000.

I've wondered about these things. For instance this: link

It promises an extra 40 horse and 4-6mpg for my GT TDI, and for £119.99. Do they really do what it says on the tin?

Who quoted you £1000 for a remap?

My understanding is that a tuning box fits between the ECU and the fuel pump/injectors etc and modifies the signals being sent which control how much fuel is injected.

Baiscally you are just adding a certain amount of extra fuel under pretty much all conditions except idle or the over run. As everything else is still unchanged, turbo boost being the main factor you are simply running richer which may produce more power but probably with more smoke etc.

A Remap also controls the Turbo boost so the amount of air that is being forced into the engine is increased along with the amount of fuel. This means the performance gains can be much greater with no increase in smoke etc.

I'd go for a remap over a box every time.

I ran one for 30-odd thousand miles on the Fabia and more on the Octy. Great little bits of kit provided you know their limitations; made a huge difference to mid-range torque.

did you deliberately ignore the Torque increase?
+46NM (25% gain)will be noticeable.

I have one on my E61 535d and it works a treat, not had any problems - and is simply removed for any servicing etc.
Cost about 500e from Germany I think.

They will always give better MPGs as they force the ECU into increasing fuel pressure without it knowing, so when it opens up the injectors looking for 50mg of diesel to be injected, 65mg goes in instead.

The rest of the car still assumes the 50mg went in, and it'll give you a consumption figure based on what it think it has been injecting, not what it really has used.

Someone who didn't want do do it, would be my guess.
