BMW M Performance: more than M Sport + horsepower

M Division boss explains new performance sub-brand in more detail

Dr Friedrich Nitschke, boss of BMW's M Division has gone on record in a new video to defend his departments plans to create the new BMW M Performance Automobiles sub-brand.

Nitschke points out that the new brand, whose first products will be performance diesel versions of the X6 and 5-series, has its conceptual roots in the 80s with cars like the E12 and E28 M535i. He also reckons that the cars will be aimed at customers looking for "more emotionality and more performance, but don't want to lose the everyday usability of their cars".

Critics have suggested that these cars will be little more than M Sport models with added horsepower, but Nitschke refutes this, saying that M Performance Automobile products will "benefit from the full expertise of BMW GmbH; infusing power transfer with excellent dynamics."

makes sense to a degree - but if you really wanted good dynamics, you probably wouldn't have bought a car like the X6 in the first place....

so on that basis, it still sounds like a way for BMW to charge for 'value added' M features.

Today's "every day usability" simply isn't going to be compatible with a fun sports car that most people would be happy with.

I get his point, but it's basically saying he can do everything in one package, which we know is not possible.

There is a blend of compromises and they are saying they can meet them all.

Which makes me assume when they say sporty, they mean stiff with sharp steering so people think it's sporty, job done.

The 320Si was the last car that I actually felt BMW wanted to make a true sports/drivers car with. Not the most powerful, but lots of attention to detail for a fun driving experience!

So this M car diesel isn't actually a full on M car? It's a new sub-brand? As like the old M535i?

They are, but the non M cars aren't a patch on the M cars, not sure if you've driven an M version of a model you've also driven a non-M?

m-sport has now been re-branded m performance, so pay more for bodykit and more power and stiffer springs, just like before.

Not wanting to put the products down, but I'll wait until I drive one and say "I'll buy this over the M model, because it's just as fun, but a bit slower"

But they never WILL do that, because then no one will buy an M model rolleyes

I just imagine that if you looked at these brands in the same terms as say a Ford then M Performance = ST and the M Series = RS. It seems quite simple to me.

Seems everyone where my partner works specifies their BMW 318 etc with the M-pack and thinks they have a sports car. So I think the whole thing is becoming a bit devalued and just a way to flog high priced body kits. So this really doesn't make a jot of difference to a brand that is heading past losing its cachet to naff. What makes the difference is therefore not the Brand to people like us but the exceptional cars that we love like the 1M. They could call that the Braeburn Bad Breath and I'd still love it - so it's the BMW Bad Breath for me!

You might want to do a bit of research before making comments like this! M Sport models never had more power than the standard models. They had body styling, sports seats plus a few interior bits and M Tech suspension, which was softer that the full fat M suspension. The power outputs were the SAME as the standard models. Obviously aimed at those who wanted something that looked more spoting, was a bit more fun than comfort, without the harshness and running costs of a full fat M car. These new cars are even more of the same!

They used it in the previous press release, and it was like nails on a blackboard then, too.

To be fair, im all up for an M Sport Diesel model. If BMW carry on building cars that do 17mpg, in 10yrs time when oil is $200 a barrel they'll be f**ked

I know, but I don't really care any more hehe

BMW are good cars, I really like mine, but there is nothing I'd buy from their current stable of cars. I just think they are all a bit st really. No idea why. Pure heart speaking there. None of them are exciting at all.

My generally sentiment was that m-sport was for people who wanted to look like they had a sporty car, the same is happening here.

If anything, having them just being the same power, and add interest through their dynamics/looks/sound would be interesting, but yet again they have to make them faster.

Again, 320Si springs to mind. The last car that wasn't actually faster or anything, but had loads of cool things a petrolhead would delight in seeing/knowing about biggrin

I say non true petrol heads. More likely the cock with spiky hair, or a pisspot worrying save the planet ass who in turn does not realise diesels are just as bad.
