Time for Tea? Vic Elford and the Targa Florio

Legendary race, legendary driver. Give it your full attention with a cuppa

The return of our occasional brew-related segment comes courtesy of Twitter, and a morning tweet from motoring hack Mr Richard Meaden.

"Got work to do, so I'm watching Targa Florio vids on YouTube: 'Sideways through the corners, on the brink of disaster'" said @DickieMeaden. Cue no work from anybody at PHHQ for at least 15-20 minutes.

Turns out said video is of the 1972 Targa and is narrated by Vic Elford, legendary British rallyist, Sports car racer and F1 driver (don't you wish we still had sportsmen like that now?). It's a truly fab spot of nostalgia.

"I suppose one of the reasons I like the Targa," says Our Vic "is because it's very similar to rallying - which I did before circuit racing. The race is 11 laps over 45 miles of open mountain roads. The day of the race most of the roads are closed, but for most of the other practise time on the Targa they're open to the general public. And this causes all sorts of excitement. The biggest difficulty isn't really the road, but the animals or small children that might be waiting around the next corner."

No kidding, Vic. You can see why the Targa Florio hasn't been run with full-fat sports cars for some decades now. The FIA would most definitely not rubber-stamp it. And we imagine the sight of sports prototypes thundering through medieval mountain villages at three-figure speeds caused all sorts of excitement as well. Brilliant.

Nice to see the Alfa T33 in combat - lucky enough to have one in the flesh in my neighbours workshop!

The Targa Florio has to be one of the most impressively daunting circuits ever conceived, making the Nurburgring seem tame in comparison.

The physical effort required to drive it at even modest speeds is high; at full racing speeds I can only imagine what it must be like.

As I commented on a post the other day, if anyone gets the opportunity to visit it then they should jump at it without hesitation.

Must be one of my favourite vids, one of my favourite drivers and characters - still out on the track - and one of my favourite events.

The sound!

Superb snap:

Really brave, really skilled and real risks, magic by Elford, what a career that man has had, think he lives in USA but maybe wrong.

Glad this morning's displacement activity was shared with the PH massive. God knows how many man hours I'm now responsible for wasting... Vic Elford does indeed live in the States. He's a bit of a hero of mine. Met him once when he came to the UK for Race Retro a few years ago. Amazing guy, still brimming with the swagger of a man who knows he has more talent in his little finger than most professional drivers have in their entire bodies. Still likes a smoke too! If I've got one regret it's that I never had the chance to witness the Targa in all its pomp. Reminds me that I really must go and see the Isle of Man TT before that gets banned.

Yep, a good chunk of that film is used as an intro/background info to the Targa Tazmania where Bana races 'The Beast'.

That film is included in (or possibly taken from) Michael Keysers the Speed Merchants, which documents the 1972 Sportscar season. http://www.amazon.co.uk/The-Speed-Merchants-DVD/dp...

The Targo Florio section is the best bit but there is also great footage at the Ring, Le Mans and Sebring.

Was just about to post this... It's a fantastic DVD - gives a great insight into early 70s motor racing when things were far less corporate and sophisticated. Well worth a purchase...
