Gentlemen. Can any of you guys who use this give me a clue as to what degree I should be looking for? Is it based on type of car being driven (open cockpit, single seater, saloon, etc), is it based on the kind of driving position adopted, is it based on the kind of racing seat being used or is it simply about what works most comfortably for the individual driver? What degree do you chaps with Tuscan racers use? Many thanks. Mark.

Mark,
Just a heads up, stricktly speaking you should use hans compatable belts.I needed new belts at donington last year so got them then. The hans belts fit perfectly into the channel that runs over your shoulders instead of pushing the belts over towards your neck to get 3" belts to run inside the guide rails.I was only asked once last year out of 22 scrutineering checks to make sure my belts were hans compatable if i was using a hans devise. Not sure with out reading blue book if it is a regulation rather than an over zelus scrut.

Phew, thanks Perry. As much as I keep believing I've cracked the list of "must haves", something new keeps cropping up. I guess I'll just have to get used to not always having all of the knowledge, all of the time. Really appreciate the advice and insight. I use a Sabelt 6 point harness with 3" shoulder straps and never been challenged but it is important to mount your harness properly.
Here is an interesting thread, 3 years old but still relevant I believe, with comments from HANS:

and from the HANS website they confirm 2" and 3" are both OK

You can use 3" straps with a HANS device.
You can also use 2" HANS specific straps with a HANS device.
You CANNOT use 2" HANS straps if not wearing a HANS.
A scrute will never pull you up for having 3" straps when using a HANS because it is perfectly acceptable to use them. They will prevent you from racing if you present a car with 2" straps but no HANS.
Goes without saying whatever you use must be FIA approved, have all labels present and intact, be in date and have no nicks or fraying in the fabric anywhere. You should also bin them after a frontal shunt as they are designed to stretch.
The date label really is nonsense - belts don't deteriorate in 5 years (except perhaps if you lesave them in the sun all that time). What they really should have is tell tale stitching that shows if the belt has stretched in an impact - easily done, but for some reason the FIA use a 5 year life as a proxy. Daft....

Agree with all that Andy - having just bought myself a brand new set of 3" belts at the show! 3" have been fine (for me) with the Hans over the past couple of years - no problems at all and in fact I only remember I'm wearing the Hans when putting on the helmet and always forget after a race and wonder why I can't get the thing off my head! I use the "sport" and the 3" belts fit lovely. Like Keith says, you don't realise your wearing it after a while. Very Comfy.
Yes I've got the "sport" also with 3" when I got my Harness I made sure it was HANS compatible, I think the main point is it's adjustable enough to have the adjuster in the right place. As said the 1st time you use it, its a bit awkward, but after that you get used to it, unless you have to spin and have to look behind yourself.

Hi Leigh
Have you got the "vision" harnesses (straps)on your Hans? This allows you to turn your head left and right. I didnt have them when I bought my Hans 4 years ago but its an easy upgrade and they come as standard on all new Hans devices.
O
No I don't (even though I got mine last year at auto sport) will look into upgrading it.Have you got the "vision" harnesses (straps)on your Hans? This allows you to turn your head left and right. just bought one at autosport show 20 degree for a tuscan and a large for my fat boy neck!
thought it a wise investment!
Can I ask how much it was at Autosport? Just trying to gauge whether it's worth me asking my son in California to buy and ship one over for me. Apparently the only difference between Pro and Sport is the weight (the Pro being CF), other than that they work exactly the same. US EBay at current exchange rate gets me into a 20 degree Sport for about £340 (plus shipping, but that's fairly cheap from the US). How does that compare with special offer/autosport show discounts? Many thanks!thought it a wise investment!
