Increasing Ceiling Height by lowering floor
Discussion
I'm not entirely sure what this would be termed as (hence googling not turning up very accurate results) - We looked at a grade 2 listed cottage and the ceiling height for a 6 footer was minimal to say the least... We did notice however that next door seemed to 'step down' into their cottage.
Is it possible to dig under flooring (which was laminate, if that makes a difference to the work)to increase the ceiling height and is this a costly procedure?

It's under the laminate that counts! It's definitely possible (people dig out whole basements under houses) but you'll need to pull the floor up to have a look....you'll obviously need to get proper/damp proof membrane etc
It will be expensive and the reality is even if you go down a foot the ceilings will still be very low....depends what you want really. Houses that old obviously don't have proper foundations (by modern standards) so you can't go too deep without serious expense.
We looked at a cottage 18 months ago which we dimsissed for similar reasons....especially because a couple of the doors were well short of 6ft.

Yes and yes if this lot agree.dickymint said:
Grade 2 listed - whatever you do get the planners involved first for consent.
Depends how much you want the house and how much money you've got.Gassing Station | Homes, Gardens and DIY | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
