Recently sold my F430-F1 and I am now looking for a more 'every-day' performance car. Will be viewing a few R8's this week (all V8 models), any thoughts on the R-Tronic box? I know it will not be as good as the F1 box in the F430, however is it worth it? Or should I stick to the manual box on the R8?
Your comments would be most appreciated!

Can you stretch to a V10 (70ish may get you one) ?
After the F430 you may be a little disappointed with the performance of the V8...
The R-Tronic box is crap in the R8 IMO anyway my V10 could pull from walking pace to 150+ in 4th... Who needs an auto!!? smile

Looking to use the R8 quite heavily so I think the long-term running costs and depreciation of the V10 will be considerably higher. Good V8's with the right spec can be had for mid-fifties.

I've only test driven the R8 R-Tronic, but I found it to be almost unusable in full Auto mode, really really jerky, didn't like it at all.

Hi there Rick I'm considering changing to a V8 R8 in a couple of months from my Gallardo, I too am looking at spending mid fifties to free up some cash so will follow your thread with interest. Im actually originally from Acton and only 15 mins from your business premises so might swing by when you get your R8 for an honest review of the differences? Personally I'm going for a manual as I've kinda missed a gear lever and apparently it's one of the best manual boxes out there, good luck with your search

Not driven a 430 auto but have the 560-4 E-gear and the R8 V8 auto. The R8 auto is a big disappointment. Manual is the way on the R8.

manual..its a great manual box, very tactile, the r-tronic system is st.As for running costs ..I think the v10 has as near as dam it the same petrol consumption figures and I dont think the servicing is much more but check on the r8talk.com forums

Unlike a few others here, I didn't find the rtronic I test drove that bad I have to admit and that was in comparison to a 430 F1 gearbox. That being said it was the V10 rtronic which I was told was a rather better box than the rtronic in the V8. The R8's manual box is great to use though and was what I went for in the end.

Appreciate all your comments, also had a read of similar topics on the R8TALK forum and conflicting reviews. Have a booked a test drive of a R-Tronic R8 at West London Audi tomorrow, will update all accordingly.

IMO the R-Tronic is horrid! Just awful!

My V8 R8 is manual and the gearbox is great. The gate is perfectly possitioned and neutrally balanced. Mine's now done 50k+ miles and it's not missed a beat. I had an e-tronic one for a month and in auto mode it was awfull. However once in paddle-mode it came to life and encouraged you to double dip into corners to enable maximum acceleration out of them.

Don't make the mistake of comparing it with an F430 though. I've also got a Gallardo SE. The Gallardo is proper V10 italian pantomime super sports car, where as the R8 is a very solid sports car (with cruise control and a top stereo)

R8 manual = Top Car

V10 is about the only compromise I would realistically consider in place of the 430 ... have driven both and the v10 was by far the better car. The F1 box is still far better than anything Audi have so ..but if I wanted an everyday supercar in place of an 430.. I'd be going 991. Still think Audi R8's have scary depreciation at the moment.

I drove a V10 R8 auto R-tronic thing at the weekend, when I put my foot down the kick from the box almost gave me whip-lash !! Really hated it.

I have a new R8 V10 and is my everyday car, is R-Tronic also. Clearly the box is not as good as ferrari (audi never claimed it to be) but is not bad at all compared to comments i hear...i drive it all the time and never have the jerk people refer to, clearly you need to drive is in manual mode and know 'how' to drive it ... the old boxes were crap, the new software so much better.

good luck, in my view the perfect compromise from moving from ferrari into everyday car provided you can live with 2 seats.

I had a few track laps in a R8 v8 r-Tronic a couple of years ago and it worked to a point but not the best.
Took a V10 out last week on the road and in auto mode the R-Tronic is awful, but then I never use auto in the 430 which is a bit better but not sure why you'd bother with it. In M the R8 was better and M sport better still, it's not F1 but I bet it's not far off e-gear shift times and software. The biggest disappointment was the sound inside the car, it's just dead. If I was to switch I'd invest a couple of grand in an active valved miltek in a nano second and use the sport button alot.
If your only into fun road work and could have traffic and town work take the manual, fast road and track take a R-Tronic.
Oddly I think and new S-Tronic R8 might go down the 458/PDK/dual clutch route and lose some of the aggressive nature of supercars. The aventador might be the last head snapper which might be a good or bad thing depending on what you like?

I have a R8 V8 Manual, had it for nearly 3 years ....never had any problems with it, servicing costs are no more than any other sporty Audi (£450 full service £140 brake fluid change). The auto is not such a good drive.....not aggresive enough (for me anyway) manual is the way to go whether its a V8 or V10 .

I agree re sound, its a huge disappointment for such a car. i have not upgraded the exhaust but am thinking about it. When i pass a Ferrari it puts the R8 to shame in noise department until you floor the R8 and at over 5k revs the V10 sound comes into its own but would like something a little louder around town at lower revs.

Re the sound....put a miltek on,I put one on mine and I had the revo engine software installed and it was epic, added loads of mid ran punch and made it better to drive.( I went into mine from a 997 turbo so performance did seem a bit lacking hence the upgrade)
Ref depreciation ..the r8 has held up really well compared to say a 997 ,buying new is not a sensible proposition but it isn't for any car,a used r8 will depreciate less than a new 991 over a 3 year period I would imagine.
