Toyota GT86: £24,995

Toyota blinks first and confirms GT86 price - your move, Subaru

As you'll have gathered from Harris's first drive earlier in the week the excitement about the Toyota GT86 - and its Subaru BRZ twin - appears to be well deserved. One number that hadn't been confirmed up til now was the price, but Toyota has confirmed what we thought and announced a basic price of £24,995 for when sales start in June.

No word yet on what you'll get in that price, but the bits we're interested in - the rear-driven, limited-slip diff chassis, 200hp Subaru-donated boxer four, compact size and lively handling - are all standard.

How much for this much fun? £25K it seems

Pricing is always a lively topic of conversation on PH, so we'll leave you to the number crunching but, to give you some inspiration, we've dug out some pricing on likely rivals.

A VW Scirocco in comparable 210hp 2.0-litre form starts at £24,960 though you can get cheaper 1.4 variants too. The GT86 does undercut the equivalent 211hp Audi TT 2.0 TFSI (£27, 140) by a useful margin while its nearest rear-driven equivalent would be the BMW 1 Series Coupe, which costs £27,115 in 218hp 125i M Sport guise. You can get a 170hp 120i too - £22,650 in Sport or £25,560 in M Sport.

Other alternatives? A 184hp Mini Cooper S Coupe starts at a more reasonable £19,775 or £23,795 in 211hp JCW form. Or you could have a Peugeot RCZ - £23,595 for the 200hp petrol turbo.

All very interesting, but the one price we're really waiting for is Subaru's...

Very good news, especially in light of rumours of a £28k price!

Fair to expect a fancier interior spec version for £27k then?

Hmm. Any idea on the JDM price out of curiosity?

Well priced and hope it sells all they can make.

But of course it needs 300bhp, bigger wheels, better tyres, should weigh less than 750kg and cost £15k laugh

Seems spot on to me - this or an equally priced Scirocco...... no contest surely (asuming the specs are comparable)?

not bad price for the package. also interested in the Subaru price. not that i can get either right now frown

reading the review in Tope Gear magazine last month they preferred the Subaru over the Toyota, although they were only allowed to have 3 laps round a small track in the Toyota, as opposed to the mountain storming day they had in the BRZ.

They obviously couldn’t get a fair judgement based on the difference in the tests, but did say they though the BRZ would be the better car of the two.

I’d also expect Subaru to possibly put out an STI type model later in the year, not necessarily turbocharged, but I can’t see it being long before one of the many tuning companies does that to one anyway!

the base spec 1.8 softtop is £18k and the top spec hard top £23k but you can get that for £18k new on the road although its still 40bhp down (having said you could get the BBR SC kit installed and still be £2k down on the GT86...)

Its a little disappointing that they aren't undercutting the scirocco tbh but i'm sure they'll sell well at that price none the less.

and don't call me shirley.

I think that is a fair price.

Obviously people are going to come on here expecting a 400bhp v8 beast for £10,000 but considering a specced up golf gti is ~30k these days it seems fair.

Sounds like a fantastic value proposition for a driving enthusiast when you look at all the FWD hatchback derived stuff (and indeed actual hatchbacks) that costs more. smile

If you can get a top-spec hard top for £18k I think you'd have enough left over to get that turbo kit that was on the front page a while ago fitted. scratchchin

I think that's a good move price wise, if it had been over £25k i think people would have more issues, looks like a serious bargain compared to the 190 Celica now!

I wouldn't really be that worried about undercutting the Scirocco - the markets don't overlap that much. Scirocco is a bit of an image item, whereas much as Toyota would love this to be, it isn't quite. Much more of a driver's car focus, thinking along the lines of a Nissan 350Z for the market. For any driving enthusiast who might look at this sort of car, the Toyota's RWDness and doubtless excellent dynamic package would make it a clear winner over a 'Roc anyway, no?

Now, i'm not being funny and have nothing against Toyota but.....

Is it me or does this look like a Hyundai Coupe just sort of a bit tweaked? And can anyone forgive me for predicting, in about 4 years time this car will be hanging around with Alfa Giuliettas and Mazda RX8s in the residual value of the Greek Economy Section of the Classified ads... I was so excited when hearing the talk of the 'New Supra' or 'New Celica' but when I saw this it was like letting go of an untied balloon, utter deflation and the sound of a big Toyota whoopsie.

I have read great things about the performance but in this vain world it doesn't take away from the absolute fact that it's just a bit boring looking!? Almost that Toyota designers thought of not committing to being too extreme in the fear of niching the cars appeal, I understand they want to appear to a wide audience but at what cost? In my opinion, from any potential buyers position, why wouldn't you buy a prettier Scirocco or TT for this sort of money?

On the other hand, that is exactly what Subaru have done, by adding wings and blokey stuff, the Car has narrowed it's audience but, in my opinion, will define the exact reason for a sports coupe like this to exist, sensible money for something that gets the right amount of attention, the right amount of tingle in the right regions when pressing the go pedal without making you feel like you bought a Toyota because you couldn't afford something better.

I just don't think Toyota have got it right.

Sorry!

From my reading of the article and it appears it's cheaper than most of its real rivals? confused

Cheaper and, if the reviews are to be believed, better unless you're a plastic snob.

I look forward to seeing it on the road, it isn't the nicest looking thing, but perhaps in real life it will work better.

If I was in the market for a new car and was looking at this sort of thing or one of the rivals mentioned in the article, I'd be hard-pushed NOT to get a GT86/BRZ. The 1-series would come a close second but I just can't get over the looks of the 1-series coupe.

But purely as a second-hand buyer I really hope resale prices of these utterly flop cos I'd like one in a few years!
