PistonHeads Photography Session 25th February 2012

A few places remain on the first PH photo session of the year

It’s the start of the 2012 PistonHeads photography sessions and we have a full calendar of events lined up throughout the year. Sessions run for all types of photographer, from the beginner to the more advanced snapper. Today we offer you the chance to take the last few places available on the first session of the year, a general studio session taking place on Saturday 25th February. This session offers the widest and most varied mix of tuition and suits beginner and professional alike.

PistonHeads HQ just happens to be alongside the LAT photography studio, and we have arranged for LAT's pro snapper Pete Spinney to teach the methods used to capture a car in the style that you would see on a magazine front cover. He'll walk you through various angles and styles, working together as a group, to achieve the perfect shot.

After lunch (included) we invite you to bring your own cars into the studio (we can usually shoot six cars during this time) to help you put the skills learned in the morning into practise. Pete will be on hand throughout the afternoon to offer advice and he’ll also to show some basic post-production skills on the computer.

You do need to bring your own camera to the session, along with any additional kit you might have, but any DSLR equipped with a kit lens will do just fine. You will learn how to use studio lighting in addition to a host of other studio equipment throughout the day under Pete’s guidance, and at the end of the day you will understand exactly how lighting can affect your photography.

This session will run from 09.30-17.00, lunch is included (we eat in the studio) as are teas and coffees throughout the day

The agenda for the day will be as follows:

09.30 - 10.00: General welcome and studio rules

10.00 - 12.30: Studio shoot of car – learn how to light a car in a studio. We’ll try to shoot 3-4 main angles, and teach the techniques of perfect lighting along the way. Everyone will be able to ask questions and see first-hand the way to achieve the perfect shot, regardless of experience level.

12.30 - 13.30: Lunch is served. Chat over the morning and choose the cars for the afternoon session.

13.30 - 16.30: Shoot your cars. You take control of lighting and shooting the car of your choice, working in small groups. During the afternoon you will be able to ask technical photographic questions, see how images are developed on the Mac in post-production and get one-on-one advice.

16.30 - 17.00: End of play, time to review the day and ask any final questions before close.

The remaining places are charged at £150 per person and payment will be required before the session. To reserve a place, or if you have any questions, all you need to do is send an email to us. Spaces will be reserved on a first-come, first-served basis.

We look forward to seeing you there on the day.

I really enjoyed this when i went last year. Great fun and gave a fantastic insight into how photographs are composed for magazines. I'm by no means an expert with a camera but by the end of the day i was very happy with the shots I was producing with my cheapy old DSLR. I even managed to get a few minutes to shoot my fabia vrs which was pretty fun especially when we spend most of the day taking pictures of more exotic cars (eg. audi r8 etc...)

Recommended highly!

From what i remember I just emailed requesting what day i wanted to go and garlick responded saying yay or nay. I don't think they post up which days are full etc... There's plenty of space in the studio so i'd imagine there'll be room on most days.

I would love to attend one of these sessions and will do some day. Any chance of hosting something further north?

Perhaps, although not on the immediate plans.

As the studio is alongside the PH office it makes it easy for us to host events there (and we know them rather well too), but never say never.
