What to look for when buying a Porsche Cayenne S
Discussion
If budget allows go for the Turbo....hardly anything between them in terms of MPG,so may as well have more fun!
Main things are cooling pipes (should have been converted to metal)check when coil packs last changed and cardon shaft for wear...also LOTS of electrics on board so check everything works.

Buying guide in Evo this month - the one with the 15K buying guide on the front. Probably Feb but might be Mar out now.
Worth reading the Evo guide. They mention potential engine issues (par for the course with a modern Porsche, it seems) with the early Cayenne S, though I can't say what the issue was as I don't have the magazine to hand right now and can't quite remember the exact details.Fire car up listen for tapping sound that doesn’t go away, likely bore liner c£1,000
Check coolant level
Check for coolant smell and check wheather it has had the replacemnet pipes cost £700 -£1000
Drive car and kick down at least 2 gears if it bangs walk away its valve chest in the gearbox c£1,000
Propshaft is a rattling noise when pulling away there are recon's available so £400
Oil leaks are not normal
Bearing noises beware
Check for last spark plug change as quite a heavy cost service compared to normal and coil packs add another £400+
Also Brake discs and pads,

Ok, had a chance to dig out last month's Evo. Here is what it said about the engines:

Turbos and V6s are broadly trouble-free apart from the V8's original plastic coolant pipes under the inlet manifold, which should have been changed to the later aluminium ones. Each spark plug's individual coil pack can fail, too, leading to a misfire. The big problem is the S's Lokasil cylinder-coating failure. It starts with a sudden appetite for oil and an increasing knock, followed by a misfire as the bores and pistons are shredded. From first signs to death can take as little as 500 miles, and the problem can strike from around 70,000 miles. Turbos and later S models have a Nikasil coating which gives no trouble.
I got a 2004 V6 with full service history and 58000 miles for £9800 so deals are there to be had.
There will be those how say the V6 is down on power but for me it is ok, also for MPG the V8 may be near the V6 out of town but in town there is a big diffrance.
it was never going to match my old 996 so V6 for me

Thanks all keep the info coming i keep looking on piston heads for one but the ones i have seen have a lot miles on them some over 100,000..... may have to increase the budget to get a good trouble free mechanical one!
Mines over 100k but motorway miles. Its nothing for these cars, the interior and exterior has worn amazingly and it looks like its done 30k miles. Its a 2006 as well so a lot of improvemnts under the skin. Selling it very soon if youre interested and it has all the stuff you need like air, 20", dension gateway, ali coolant pipes etc..jackal said:
