Hi there folks. I test drove a 61 plate ex-demo Polo GTi with 4000 miles today. I'm thinking of swapping my Ed30 for this to reduce tax and fuel costs but also to get a newer car that has warranty and lower maintenance costs due to age.

However, is the 1.4 TSi engine still a nightmare for oil consumption?

Has all the earlier issues not been resolved now by VAG?

Should I now be able to trust a 61 plate, newer car?

Dont want to let my Ed30 go then regret it!

I think I read somewhere that a revised engine is coming in May.

There is no way that I'll be keeping my Polo beyond the expiry of it's warranty.

Found out there's been a recall of pre Aug 11 cars as after that the engine had some sort of revision.
Where did you hear bout the new engine in May?

Mines not a Polo, it's a Fabia. But the exhaust is sootier than any diesel, I'm constantly topping it up with oil (although it's not quite at the official investigate/repair/new engine level). It makes some weird noises on start up now, until it's warmed through. I hate the gearbox, which is as inept as it is brilliant, and that sounds like a bag of spanners sometimes too.

It's a very flawed and very fragile drive train IMO, no way would I go anywhere near one out of warranty. Mines 18 months old and done 20K, and I can tell that by the time I hand it back at 3 years old it'll be not far off knackered and a liability for any subsequent owner.

Avoid.

Loaf of crap IMO, they use oil, doesn't matter whether people are reading it differently, hot or cold, they use oil, it's not rocket surgery. I've put three 5 litre cans in mine so far, and I'm nearly through my fourth 5 litre can.

I suppose I can see what they're getting at, if it's warm, rather than hot, and they've not left it long enough to drain down. But if you check it cold, it will be the same as when it's hot, or maybe even a touch higher, it can't not be.

I generally check mine hot, after five or ten minutes, and I do check it when cold too.

I've had 4 Fabia VRS as company demonstrators, and have covered roughly 25000 miles in them as I do just over 2000 miles a month, apart from one of them having a complete oil change as it had done 10000 miles so was due a service I've topped up max 2 litres of oil which I'd say is fantastic.

With regards to MPG I'd say 35/36 is realisticly what you'd get, I average about 27/28 but drive it quite hard on my 24 mile commute to work, 14 miles A road 10 miles A/B road. If I just follow traffic say average 40MPH I see 40/43 on the trip computer but that's boring.

If you genuinely want to change your car for running costs and you don't just fancy a change I doubt it'll work out too much better on you wallet.

As above, the cost to change far outweighs the potential savings. If you want it, buy it. If you need to save money buy a Bluemotion.

Evo's 'end of term' this month on their Polo GTI recorded 3 litres topped up over 10,000 (undoubtedly hard) miles I think. Will check the exact figures when I get home tonight.

Well i fancied a change as i've had the Ed30 for 2 years 5 months and am getting itchy feet but i'm also looking to reduce costs too whilst keeping some sort of performance and toys ala Ed30.
The Polo GTi fitted the bill nicely, it is a cracking car in looks, performance and running costs. However, with the current engine issues I've resigned myself to giving the Polo a miss.
I declined the car with the dealer this morning and he accepted it without question - he actually said he didn't blame me and knew where I was coming from!

I'm one of the few it seems that haven't had issues with oil consumption. in 30'000 miles I have topped up once. Its had a service and due another in 1100 miles.

Some points to note;

10 tyres in total,
Rear brake discs & pads,
Front pads,
1x drivers window regulator,
1x passenger window regulator,
1x wing mirror control swtich,
Rattles/squeaks
Really loud vibration sound from steering column when moving off (VW can't trace it)
My 26 mile commute to work has recorded as much as 54.4MPG and as low as 14.8mpg. Currently averaging 28.0mpg.

I don't want to say I'm disappointed in the car, I'm not. Not in the slightest. It's a great little motor. I've spent more on this car in 30K than I did with a Swift Sport in 35K. And the Polo cost £7'000 more.

I just expected so much more from VAG. I was looking to trade it in next month for a Golf GTI but I just can't bring myself to it now. I'd be gutted if I spent £32'000 on a Golf and it turned out like the Polo.

I now await the new Focus ST (I must be crazy though - not as if the Focus is much better hehe)

5 pairs of tyres in 30k miles. Sounds as if you give it some abuse.

I do 30k miles a year and would only expect to replace one set of fronts in that time.

I put 4 Michelins on when I bought it so technically, not worn through 10 tyres. I'm young, of course I give it abuse!lol.

30'000miles a year and you only put 2 front tyres on? Surely not, sounds very very optimistic

Dave - what's shocking and disgusting is that VW are even bothering with a consumption test! They know damn well there's mega-issues with these engines. They should just recall EVERY car and just put the new revised engine in them.

It would cost them st loads but they are VAG not some poxy manufacturer!

If it's all motor way there is no reason why not. Many years ago I got 45000 out of a set, they ere well bald by the end though. 30,000 miles a year on the motorway and nothing wears out.

I do mostly motorway miles but I would get 25k out of the fronts on my R32 and based on the current wear rate on the Pirellis the fronts on my Scirocco should exceed that.

I am a very smooth driver though, I did 84k miles in my R32 and it was still on the original pads and discs all round when I sold it.

I'm not saying I was as smooth a driver when I was in my teens or 20s :-)
