Morning

Been offered a 2 year old Audi S5. Here quite mixed reviews on it and wondered if any current or past owners, could share their view of owning the car.

I love the looks of it, and it drives better than my current Audi, but have read lots of pieces on reliability saying its not up to scratch? Thanks

So last of the V8s? Actually really nice things as long as you're not expecting an Elise or drift car.

Subtly handsome thing with bags of torque and a great soundtrack, nice steering weighting and with a few options the interior is a really lovely place to sit. Standard exhaust is a little on the weedy side and they don't feel as fast as they are because they major on stability and all weather performance.

Plenty of people will argue that a 3.0 TDI is a better option and whilst they're incredibly efficient they don't induce the same smile that big V8 does.

What goes wrong? People complain of clutch judder but 'they all do that sir' and the clutches actually last very well, relatively high oil consumption is normal, door handles and ignition switches can stick, the finish on the MMI dial wears quickly and looks tatty, if the previous owner was a fatty the outer seat bolster can wear (although the seats themsevles are superb) and the footrest/clutch pedal are too close together (particularly if you have big feet or wear chunky shoes).

I'm size 8 and in formal shoes I never catch my foot on it but trainers do. A slight tweak to your driving position helps but after a few miles you won't even think about it.

What's the spec/colour combo of the car you're looking at?

Its Black with the Red leather. I quite like it, and normally would not go for the red leather.

As a matter of interest, what's the room like in the rear. Room for 2 adults on a long trip or children only?

To my eye, there is nothing blander than a black car w/black leather.

Black & red (plus V8 sounds!) seems full of win to me.

Depends how tall everyone involved is. I'm 5'7 and fit fine in the back if the driver is less than about 6'. Head room is the main limiting factor for obvious reasons, leg room is actually alright.

Do it !

I hummed and hawed for a couple of months before taking the plunge.

I looked at all the different colour combinations but when a phantom black with black interior came up I decided to go for it. I looked at white with red black with red, black with white.

White interior - I looked at a couple and the leather was engrained with dirt, cars with approx 25k on the clock. This put me off the cream.
Red interior - I felt it was too much, great contrast with a grey/black or white exterior but don't think I could stomache it long term and the novelty would wear off.

Each to there own though.

Must have options for me were....B&O, sat nav, heated seats, park front and rear. I got this plus rear view camera, memory seats with folding mirrors/auto dim, adaptive lights, cruise, AMI

I purchased from a dealer, I wanted the 12month AUC warranty, compared to private I probably paid £1k to £1.5k more but then I was willing to pay a bit more to ensure I had a straight car with maintenance free motoring for 12months.

Love the noise, it's sure footed, subtle yet catches people eye.

I do a mixture of b road/motorway miles, worst I have seen MPG wise is low teens (giving it some beans) best is 30mpg (low motorway speed) but you don't buy these for MPG.

You won't be disappointed.

My cousin's husband ran one for a year and loved it. Nothing went wrong to my knowledge and he had no complaints on the driving position and he's 6-4.
Only reason he got rid was the fact he does 20k+ miles per year and thats a lot of fuel @ 22 mpg.
Didn't go in the back but boss at work had a 3.0TDi and I fitted in the back behind him with no problems, we are both 5-10 ish.

Silver leather can look dirty but it cleans up extremely well; we've had plenty of them in with miles on and after a valet the leather looks superb.

Black gets just as dirty, incidentally wink

They look nice...I could be tempted as long as I can regularly achieve a single figure MPG. Is the market still strong for these? Getting bids on a 8P 3.2 is hilarious fun- CAP Average is £7k, 'they're running £14k behind book sir...'

Scary value now; they're mega difficult little cars to sell so any dealer is going to want a bit of danger money in it.

Someone that wants S3 performance and has S3 money will buy an S3, someone that hasn't got S3 money and wants the performance will look at a 2.0T quattro, someone that wants S3 performance with even less budget or low mileage use doesn't want to pay £445 for their road tax so looks back to a 2.0T. Doesn't leave many buyers frown

Which is a shame as the 3.2 my pal runs sounds absolutely fantastic with it's new exhaust fitted. Way better than the 4 pots.

I have been looking at these myself but dont think they stack up as well against the M3. I think they might look a little nicer but as far as I can tell are not as good to drive/handle etc.

M3 is not really a direct competitor product. S5 compares better with something like a 335i.

An S5's steering I think is very good, found the E46 M3 to feel nervous and unsettled in comparison. I'd say the S is a significantly better day to day proposition in terms of refinement, space and ergonomics.
