KBS Rust Seal Review

Thought I'd post up my experiences with the KBS product range. Most people seem to go for POR15. But I just wasnt that struck on the fact it was based to go over rust directly rather than bare metal.

The KBS system consists of Aqua clean , Rust Blast, Then Rust Seal. They now sell in the uk an off white shade of Rust Seal so I gave it a go.

I had a bad patch of corrosion on the near side adjacent to the last cat. In the picture below you can see how severe the rust is. The powder coating has failed and metal delamination has occured.



It had played on my mind for a while and beofre summer came I wanted to treat it. I was going to spot blast it but decided to just use a drill extension and flap wheels and wire brushes.





as you can see there was a fair amount of pitting. I prodded around with a screw driver and it amazingly has remained strong.

Once the rust was removed the first step was to clean the area with Aqua Klean. It claims to remove anything but I didnt find it as effective as anticipated. It struggled to clean off wax oil in the area. In the end I got bored with scrubbing and got a can of panel wipe out. That cleaned the area off imediately

Step two was to apply Rust Blast. This converts the rust and is supposed to leave a zinc phosphate coating. You can just see some colour change in the photo below after the Rust blast has been applied.




The only thing I found awkward with rust blast is it must not dry out. So you have to repeatedly go back and keep wetting it. Once youve done about an hour and a half of this it needs flushing with water to clean. I did practice sessions on the anti roll bar clamps and decided that if you let the dry metal dry naturally you get slight corrosion. I decided to get an air gun and dry it with the compressor to avoid this.

The rust blast as well as acting as an etch allows you to leave the item for approximately 30 days before a top coat needs to be applied.

The last step was to apply the rust blast. It seems to lay up and flow well. I applied the first coat using a brust and then the second coat using a roller. The finish came out ok and will hopefully protect the metal from further corrosion







I was going to gun the kbs on but couldnt be bothered with all the masking up with a hidden area. Infact it rollered om ok and flowed well as seen by the reflections.

All in all its a good product line. id give it 8 out of 10.. what lets it down is the in-effectiveness of the aqua clean and the fact you have to keep the Rust Blast wet close to 2 hours.

Also you'll read in the literature not to let it dry on anything you dont want it to IE skin as "only time will remove" which seems to be slightly optimistic as gun wash from my local paint factors wipes the stuff off pretty easily even from skin, and cleans the brushes and rollers. Mind you that leaves your hands looking like yodas so you wouldnt want to do that too often.

The other thing I've decided after this little exercise is that with my current shoulder injuries (tendon impingement) I simply can't carry on lying on my back so will fit a ramp. Either the cj autos two post or the auto motech scissor.

Well done looks like a good fix.

I have heard good things about FE 123 from rust.co.uk. Just wire brush where you can and paint on, can also be sprayed and then just paint over it.
