out in the car this afternoon with the radio on and noticed there was no sound from behind. Played around with the settings especially the fader. if I put it all to the rear I can hear some sound from both left and right speakers, but very faint. Tried it on CD and its the same.

So suspect the amp for the rear speakers is defective / blown. Is it a separate amp or is it integrated into the central entertainment unit?

Neil,

First thing to check is that all the surround settings are turned off. This can have an effect on the level from the individual speakers due to the way that it fools the ears into believing the driver is in a concert hall, jazz club etc

There are two amplifiers in the offside rear of the car. One controls the four speakers and the centre speaker on top of the dash, for the surround sound. The other one controls the 200W sub woofer behind the passenger seat.

Normally if an amp fails it will fail completely. If you are handy with a multimeter, then a reading from any of the speaker leads and ground should show just below 6volts. This is the DC component of the sine wave from the amp indicating that that particular channel is sending power to the speaker.

Hope this helps,

Kind Regards,

James

James, many thanks for the info. Very odd then, as the amp powers front and back. Front and centre are fine. Had the car getting on 3 years and not had a problem before. Will try with surround sound off and multimeter it.
