E46 328i Touring
Noticed a bit of banging around on the way home last night, and again today on the way to a clients. Checked it out when I got home.
When you see it...
Got the million pieces of trim out of the way to find...
Top mount is about a month old
Guess what I'm up to first thing in the morning!

Ouch. That component in the picture certainly isn't a month old!
'Fraid it is - I personally bought it from the local motor factors and fitted it a month ago!Looks like bad design to me, I could press the rubber part back into the metal frame but I'm sure it would just pop out again, whether it needs some kind of adhesive in there that was missed out at manufacture or whatever I dunno.

I've had a few E36's, where the metal washer that sits between the shock and the top mount rusts away. This spreads all the load onto the centre of the top mount, which pushes the metal up through the flange.
Make sure that metal washer is still on the shock, and get a new top mount, they're hardly expensive. Try and get lemforder for OEM quality.
I'd say if that is a month old, it was either a piece of st or fitted incorrectly.

That's the kind of thing that happens when people put the washers and plates in the wrong places.

I'm leaning towards it being a piece of st at this point, manufacturing defect of some kind maybe.Make sure that metal washer is still on the shock, and get a new top mount, they're hardly expensive. Try and get lemforder for OEM quality.

Nothing to do with "plate" number 6 seeming to be ontop of the rubber mount rather than underneath?eta, check it out - it looks like it's supposed to be a replacement for the top plate if anything -
Will make sure the replacement comes with both plates, cheers for that pic.

That bit would seem to be missing in your new one, it should have a hole that is large enough so just the thread of the shock rod passes through, and not the main part of the rod.
They often tend to get put on upside down, or on the top which leads to shocks tearing on the first bump.
I've seen plenty of e36's having them tear within a few miles from that.
As mentioned above, if your originals did totally rust away to dust, you might not have had anything to look for.
It's been a while since I've done some rear mounts, but I always tell people to take both off, and then replace the mounts one by one so you can follow the original pattern, as the order of putting them together is counter-intuitive.

Half the problem I see seems to be new shock absorbers don't come with any bits, and new top mounts don't come with any bits, so you've got a new top mount and shock, but no new washers. Frustrating if they've wilted away. They often tend to get put on upside down, or on the top which leads to shocks tearing on the first bump.

Cheapo Coilover kits especially. They come with shocks, topmounts, but not all the washers and bits that are supposed to be inbetween, and no instructions either.I'd get new lower cup washers from BMW, parts 5 and 6.
12 should be the one you have on the top at the moment.
The washer in your pic above might be part 5, I can't tell.
The other possibility of it being 11 shouldn't be the case as no.11 isn't listed for an E46 tourer.
You might want to double check those part numbers incase there are any year differences, or shock type differences between your exact car, and the average E46 tourer I picked out.
