Pic of the Week: Mercedes and the DTM

A spot of 90s three-pointed star goodness for your desktop

Next weekend the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters (DTM to thee and me) kicks off, with a new look, a new set of regs and the return of BMW, about which you'll be able to read more on PH soon.

Which might well put the nose of Mercedes out of joint - it's won eight driver's titles since 2000. Mercedes may well also be a bit miffed that its 2011 star - Bruno Spengler - has jumped ship to BMW.

And although the BMWs have so far been relatively slow in testing, you'd not want to bet against them being serious rivals to the established Mercs and Audis sooner or later. Thereby initiating a new golden era in DTM, we hope, at which point the fightback from Merc will doubtless begin.

There's a precedent for this, after all. Having been stung in 1993, when Alfa Romeo got the jump on Mercedes with a 155 designed for the new Class 1 touring car regs, Mercedes promptly countered in 1994 with its own version of the new C-Class, beating Alfa to the title. And did it again in 1995. This is the Mercedes press shot, taken at the start of the 1995 season.

I thought they were ITC cars? There's a feature about them on a 1996 Duke videotape I have called "Supercars"

DTM and ITC were a sort of parallel championship, all very confusing...

If by in the UK you mean on TV, I'm not sure, but it's coming to brands on 20th May...

ETA: I think it's on ESPN live, and might also be on Motors TV at some point, but I don't think any terrestrial channels carry it, unfortunately

The latter was sucked dry and died because of the gullibility of the DTM folks which enabled the utter greed of the ............ well we mustn't name and shame, so let's just say it's also a TLA and they are rather big at the helm of motorsports near on globally.

Just the "dogs" eh! If I remember right, Mercedes could program the suspension, diff and throttle settings to the extent that the car could drive itself round each circuit. But then some wit said the car would be underweight so they put the driver in!!! wink

It will be on ITV4, but it I think it's only the highlights.

If they are only showing the best bits it'll be a very short show.

1995 was still DTM and the ITC was the name for the non-German rounds. Then in 1996 it became the fully fledged ITC.

Ah, those were the days. And they raced on the old Hockenheim circuit, and if I remember rightly the Nordschleife. Great cars, great drivers and a great series.

I did have a poster somewhere of the great Klaus Ludwig jumping over one of the crests at the Nordschleiffe in a 190E Batmobile. Stunning image.

Ah, hopefully the DTM will be great again. The late 80's and 90's were the golden age for touring cars. I don't think we'll ever see anything as good as that again but it would be nice for Mercedes to have some competition again. I'd love to see them make more fast road cars for a touring series, not just the fast SL/AMG stuff.
