Hi all,

just thought i would share my current project and everyday driver, its a Volvo S40 T4, got it standard for £600 last year. I love it as people just dont expect it keep up with them :-)

Done a few track days and looking forward to doing some this year with all my new bits. With a 2litre turbo lump that can push in excess of 500bhp these cars really are not to be sniffed at.

Im happy to take all the grandad jokes to see peoples faces when i keep up :-)

Spec:

Exterior
. BBS Crator wheels
. FK automotive grille
. matte black mirrors
. Side bump strips removed
. de-badged
. front fogs removed
. matte black bumper lenses
. Black headlight bezzals
Interior
. Stripped interior
. cut all excess metal out
Transmission and suspension
. Superflex front ARB bushes
. GAZ coilovers
. Rear strut brace
Brakes
. Black diamond grooved front discs
. Black diamond front and rear pads
Engine
. Remap to 230BHP
. Side exit exhaust no silencers
. Kalmar union dumpvalve

And basically i have removed inner skins and plastics, inner arches, the lighter the better really. Sticks like poo on a blanket with the coilovers.

Next stage is 285Bhp and 400Lbl of torque

I really like that, sounds like excellent value!

Did the wheels come with it or did you add them? Any idea how much it weighs now? I know nothing about S40's, but may be off to the classifieds now smile

yea wheels are standard, but i think only came on some of the Phase 1 T4's, it weighs as standard about 1300kg's, not sure now, need to weigh it. standard uk spec imprezas are just over 1300kg's and 215bhp :-)

V40's look great but they are more expensive and heavier.

280bhp and 400lbs of torque on the next stage? Thats a diesel like torque curve! Surely you can improve the breathing to maintain that torque in the higher revs and end up with much higher bhp? Might be worth upgrading the cams.

so what engines are these? Used to fast Volvos having 5 pots... guess this is a proper low flyer (under the radar!) of a car!

yea thats why i like it so much, im into cars that are different.

Basically its the volvo 5pot minus a pot lol. The phase 1 has a 1855cc block, and phase 2 has a 2000cc or near enough.

The earlier block is best suited for tuning, has forged pistons, no vvt, the pase 1.5 cars have this block but with better oilways in the head. the later block has i think forged pistons too, vvt on exhaust side and because of the larger cc the block walls are thinner so is slightly weaker. all engines run a low comp turbo.

Hence why both engines can take big power. im not sure why it produces so much torque, but the figures are given from a very common mod.

Astra VXR injectors (470cc), V70 T5 modified manifold, downpipe and turbo, and a remap.

youtube Volvo S40 T4 and there are some videos of a 500bhp+ one racing lambos and stuff

Really don't understand why anyone would remove the front logo. It's an awesome Volvo, don't hide that!

Hi Ross, I think you can forget about 500bhp+ from any of these T4 engines. Im not saying that it can't be done at all, but for reliability, cost, drivability and did I say reliability, 400bhp-ish will be more than enough with weight removed.

Well done, I've been looking at the V40's recently.

How have you found working on them?

They were options late on in phase 1
I had a very early T4 V40 for a couple of years as a company car

A older family member had one of these.
He only had a 950cc ford fiesta and a 1.4 renault 5 campus before.
He bought it on the basis it looked nice and then went on to scare the crap out of him when he first floored it like his renault 5.
He actually sold it to my uncle 2 month later.

Really like these...

Is the earlier engine only in the pre-facelift cars?

Is this engine used in any other car? Or specific to the T4?

They were very popular at the drag strips here in sweden some years ago. They seems to have superb tunability, lots of really crazy examples here.

I have only driven a 2.0T ph1 and it almost torque steered me of the road with stock power smile

Good luck with your build, will probably be a really fast car !
